D_ManXX2 Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I had to reinstall an old laptop with windows 7 home premium, but everything was going well till sp1 was installed and now windows update takes really long time to do anything it makes svchost.exe go up to 1.7 gig and keeps the CPU usage to 50 % Is this normal ?? and how long am i suppose to wait till it finally finds new updates ?? On my desktop i never saw this behaviour before. At least i never noticed it, but it wal a long time ago i installed windows 7.
shane4244 Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I'm not sure if it's normal or not but my laptop behaves like that with Windows 7. I'm not on my laptop much so I'm always behind on the updates and that damn trusted installer and svhost is a resource hog it normally takes around an hour or so for me before I can really do anything with it besides browse the internet.(even that is sluggish) You would think the updates would be a low level background process but they seem to be top priority and my laptop is spec'd decent too. Same as you I have no problems on my desktop with updates but it's a beast so I don't know.
wildtangent Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I have the same problem with Win 7. Windows security essentials can't even download virus definitions. Sorry I can't be of any help to you, but I just turn off my windows updates. There is supposedly a fix if you do a search for " svchost.exe high cpu usage". It didn't work for me, but maybe you will have better luck.
bjornk Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Yes, that's how Windows Update works on my Windows 7 laptop. It takes hours to get the list of available updates (CPU usage of the process is always about 50% while checking for updates). Might be related to the huge size of %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\Datastore.edb database, which is closing to one gigabyte on my hdd. Funny thing is, if you compress that file, it will become less than 20 MB. People say that there's an "update" to Windows Update that supposedly fixes this issue but I'd avoid it if I can, as it will probably open the doors for a sneak Windows 10 download as well. Just turn off Windows Update and be done with it. FYI. It wasn't like that before with SP1. Don't think it has anything to do with the service pack. They must have changed something with WU in later updates. BTW, might be unrelated, but there is also another issue with TrustedInstaller on my Windows 7 laptop. It no longer goes into "scavenge" mode after running SFC and this leaves many files inside %windir%\winsxs\Temp\PendingRenames\ folder. Only installing/uninstalling a Windows feature or an update forces it to scavenge mode. Couldn't find a solution for it.
D_ManXX2 Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 I think i may have a fix if for laptops there are several things that can work. 1: try installing internet explorer 11 on a clean install this sometime forces windows updates to kick in and you won't have to wait for hours till the windows update finally makes a list available for needed updates. 2: Looks like windows 10 was the culprit after the introduction of this OS windows update for windows 7 got borked march this year microsoft seem to have admitted that that was the cause whne they started to migrating everything to windows 10 windows 8 8.1 where unaffected due to the updates system veing excatly the same. But here is where they explain it better then i ever could. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 I wish i knew about this update i wasted more then 4 days to get this laptop fully updated with the latest patches. since after KB3102810 windows 7 finally started to work with windows update again.
