shar181 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I'm having some trouble with a particular -- and distinctly wonderful -- mod! I use the Shaydow's VampireLord Overhaul, which allows the player's character to retain their appearance when they enter their Vampire Lord form. The mod works perfectly for a human character, but when playing with an elven character it requires an extra step that has me stumped. I'll start by explaining the basics. When the mod is installed, it stores the replacement files for the new Vampire Lord model here: Data > Meshes > Actors > VampireLord > Replacements The mod's author, Shaydow, gave all of the files here very simple names so that the appearance of the vampire lord could be easily customized. For example, you can change the armor worn by the vampire lord just by taking an armor mesh from another mod and renaming it to "VampireLordReplacerChest.nif". I've done that successfully, so I know that all of these actually works! Other than the armor, there are files in this folder to control the skeleton, the wings, and the face of the Vampire Lord. It's the face that has been giving me trouble. I've posted about this problem in the mod's support thread (Here!), but I don't know if Shaydow is still actively providing support, or how long it will take someone else to answer. So I'm asking here, too. :3 Here is a pleasantly direct quote from someone with the same problem, and Shaydow's response: I found a slight issue. I am playing a High Elf this time 'round, and when I finally got access to Vamp Lord, for some reason her face is rather fat upon transformation. Chubby face, lithe body. Transform back, she has her typical thinframe face of an elf. Is the VampLord replacer basemodel a Breton or something? I opened it up in the CK to see if I could change something or somehow fix the face on my character... But I'll confess I don't know jack about the CK, and poking around, I couldn't seem to find a way to change her face at all. I suppose I could try changing her face the way you change the armor, but I wouldn't know what files to move or where from. You need to replace any of the head data ( this includes the head.nif as well as all the head.tri files. You can tell them by name ) with the ones you want to use. It's that simple. It definitely sounds like a pretty simple process, and I've located the files that I need to replace: VampireLordReplacerFemaleHead.nif VampireLordReplacerFemaleHead.tri VampireLordReplacerFemaleHeadChargen.tri VampireLordReplacerFemaleHeadRaces.tri However, I don't know where to find the files that they must be replaced with. I assume that at least one of these files will make the base head for the Vampire Lord elven. Elfy ears, lighter features, etc. If anyone can give me a hint where to find this stuff, I would be most appreciative! <3
Akzyra Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 All races are controlled by morphs, not the NIF and TRI files. Well, the morphs inside a TRI: femaleheadraces.tri Elves are just a morph that gets applied. But there exists a thing that might work: Morph Race It is not set for the Vampire Lord, but you can try to set it to HighElf. I guess some morphs get applied automatically when a certain condion is applied (like the race or vampire sunken cheeks). But when you are a vampire Lord you need to apply them manually. They do it with HighElfRaceVampire, if you need an example. Please report if it worked.

I'm not sure exactly why, but Shaydow's reply to the other person who shared my problem was pretty clear; in order to get it working, I need to replace the mod's default head-related files with the ones I "want to use". I assumed that the mod's default files were models designed for a human (since my elf suddenly ends up with human ears when she transforms into a vampire lord), but I can't find anything to indicate that elves would have a .nif or .tri file of their own. Maybe he meant that we're supposed to have .nif and .tri files specific to our character? Is there any way to export those files from a saved game?
Akzyra Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 No, when you are an elf you get an elf morph applied. A vampire gets something similar. Automatically, just because of a condition. And in the CK you can manually apply a Morph Race. A morph race is needed when you are a Race with a different name than the morph name, but still want the morph.Image from TES Wiki: In the middle of the image, below the stats From the Custom Race Tutorial where the name Race is the same as a nord. A better example would be the HighElfRaceVampire. Because it is the vampire version of HighElfRace it needs HighElf Morphs. It wont get them automatically because the morph name is "HighElfRace". --> Manually apply the morph race. Problem with VampLord is the same. Edit: You kinda knew it: Is the VampLord replacer basemodel a Breton or something? Yes it uses the base model without morphs.

The screenshot is super-helpful! I'll try it, and edit this reply with the results. :3 ---------------------------------------- Edit: Sadly, changing the Race Morph didn't seem to have any effect. :< Here, I'll post this side-by-side of the difference, in case that provides any clues.
shar181 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Posted October 4, 2015 Bumping! Is bumping allowed? I completely forget. ~_~ Well, no matter!
shar181 Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 Bumping again! Sort of. I'm thinking that I need to find a file called "DarkElfFemaleHead.nif". I saw it in the CK, while I was looking through race data. I can't locate it on my computer, though -- I even unpacked the "Skyrim - Meshes.bsa" file and searched through that, with no luck. ._.

Okay - shar181, this sounds like it *may* be an issue baked-into the mod itself. Check the mod's "Comments" section for any similar reports (& hopefully a solution), and also double-check the mod's Description to make sure you have installed correctly. If all else fails, PM the author & ask them for assistance - they may be willing to take a look. *You yourself shouldn't need to, but If you really do end up wanting to unpack the .tri files & have a rummage through them, I have posted a full Beginner/Intermediate-lvl tutorial on exactly how to do this with 3dsmax & NifSkope over at Anton0028's "Animation Tools N2 - .tri files" Nexus page.

I've looked through the mod's support thread, and I did find some people with the same issue... unfortunately, the mod author's explanation for how to fix it was a bit unclear. I'm still waiting for a response to my own inquiry in that thread. :3 I'm sure of this: In order to fix the problem, I need to replace the four files that I mentioned in the OP. One "nif" file, and three "tri" files. The mod author's responses to other people make me think that the files I need to replace them with are easy to acquire -- I just can't seem to find them on my own. He implies that the names of the files directly correspond to the ones that must be replaced; "VampireLordReplacerFemaleHead.nif" must be replaced with a file called "femalehead.nif". But where that file -- or the other three -- can be found, I have no idea. I'll take a look at that tutorial, though! Thanks for the tip!

I may be wrong, but what he *seems* to be saying is: if you want to make the change you are asking for, you need to take the .nif and .tri's for the head from some other mod (Ethereal Elven Overhaul, for example), copy & paste them to his Vampire Lord folder at the filepath you've mentioned, and rename them to be identical to his, which will overwrite his meshes & replace them with the ones you want to use. You could also test this out using the base Vanilla ones if you unpack the .bsa's using a BSA Unpacker. Those assets are located at: \meshes\actors\character\character assets in the Skyrim - Meshes.bsa.
shar181 Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 Well, I managed to locate and extract the four files from "Skyrim - Meshes.bsa". Unfortunately, replacing the mod files with them had no effect. :| I'm going to poke around in the esp again. Maybe Akzyra was right all along, and I just messed up somewhere the first time I tried his suggestion. ------------------------------- Edit: Oh goddess, I feel foolish. It looks like Akzyra was right all along. To fix the problem, I found the Vampire Lord race in the CK and set it's Race Morph to DarkElfRace. It didn't work last time because I had set it to DarkElfRaceVampire. :| Well, it's all fixed now and my vampire is now sexier than ever! :3

Be sure to give Akzyra cookies!
Akzyra Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Nice that it works. Gonna do the same when starting my next char (Waiting for Frostfall). Sexy VampElf ( I am glad it worked, my last attempt at a custom race made my char lose its body...)
