Kaos Wulf Posted September 18, 2015 Author Posted September 18, 2015 If they tested it all then you would not still have the problem, sorry not trying to be a dick here (lol, still succeeding maybe), my 30 years experience as a field engineer and my gut says bad motherboard or power supply if its shutting off. If its a thermal issue then the bios will usually log that as thermal event. You can only start swapping components to know for sure but I would still try the other things I mentioned. Same advice is here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000689.htm If the "service department" is in a Best Buy type of retail outfit then they probably did nothing but let it sit there. You're not being a dick, and you're right about the service department, because they're hardly professionals. I'm going to look into returning the UPS for one that supports active SFC, since I need one anyway. I still think my PC would of shut off on them if it was something hardware related, but it sat there for days without issue. Almost certainly a GPU issue. Your experience versus the service department rules out most other explanations. First step would be to uninstall all drivers for your card and reinstall from a stable, non-beta release. How does it rule out other explanations? Only thing different are peripherals and my UPS. This has been an ongoing issue since June, back before the current nvidia drivers.
bjornk Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 The first thing you should do is to try using the PC with another OS (could be another Windows or Linux, perhaps a live one) without installing any driver software. Get a live Linux CD (or DVD/USB Stick) and test your PC with it. Doing this will rule out OS & driver possibilities. Also, you had this problem before the UPS, so I wouldn't blame the UPS for no reason. I'm pretty sure your UPS would give you at least an audible signal when there's an issue with electricity.

If the UPS is having a local fault because it's overheating(battery or components), then it won't give an audible signal it'll simply trip into a safe-state mode, or overheating protection mode for the battery. That was a common problem on the APC-EPS350 models, it was fixed in a later hardware revision 1.1A. There is a possibility that the PC is drawing more then the AC circuit itself can handle but it's not enough to trip the audible alarm too, in which case the UPS is making up the difference and depleting the UPS which then shuts down when it hit's zero. My current cyberpower UPS does that, my old APC did it. There was no audible alarm for it either, rather there was a distinct buzz when it kicked over into battery failover to pick up the voltage slack though, but it's super quiet on the new UPS. In anycase it's something easy to test, hook it up without the UPS and see what happens. Hook it up to another outlet and see what happens as well. It could also be that the circuit in question is shared with another and that's causing problems. My parents had that problem, if the PC was on upstairs and someone used the microwave it would trip the circuit. The house was 150 years old, and all that though.
Kaos Wulf Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 I believe I have discovered the problem.....and I am completely blown away by it; this is definitely a first. It's my main monitor. Sony discontinued it because it had so many problems, namely the Audio/Video cutting out. I got it 3 years ago, on sale, because it seemed like a good 3d display with high refresh rate. I got lucky with it all things considered; many people reported theirs just dying on them after a month. On a hunch, I decided to run with just that screen to see what would happen. Sure enough, I had the A/V cutting out on me, but the PC stayed on. It's been on for about 18 hours now, the longest it's ever been on at one time (while in my home). This explains why it never shut off at the service department; they weren't using it in a dual-screen setup with my 3d display. What's been causing my PC to shutoff this whole time, was the 3d display throwing a fit when it was paired with another screen. Astounding.
bjornk Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 The only thing different in my setup compared to theirs, is that I run dual-screen and HDMI through my main monitor, and that's it.Try using a single monitor and a connection other than HDMI and test this with both monitors. That monitor may have a grounding problem that is carried over to your PC via the HDMI cable.
Kaos Wulf Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 At any rate, I've ordered a new one and I go to pick it up in store today. I suppose I can mark this one solved. Thanks for all the support everyone. Finally after a months long ordeal, I can breath a sigh of relief. The monitor had issues with the HDMI, and when paired with another screen, it forced my PC to shut off.
Imperfection Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Hey glad you got this resolved, definitely one for the notebook of odd problems. I am really glad I was wrong and was not MB or PS as monitor is easier to fix/replace and think what Bjornk said is spot on. Is the new on behaving itself now or did you get something different?

I got an ASUS VG248QE, it works fine except that I had to buy new speakers since you can't get 144hz through the HDMI; had to go DVI.
