KristyllLascivicious Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Hey LL. I'm just curious if it's "possible" to install multiple versions of MO with the mods stored in different file directories on the same PC/skyrim install as a means of testing and isolating some applications which would conflict with each other. I understand this would require redundant mod installations, but there are some applications and changes I've made to some mods' install configurations and data I'd rather not either lose altogether or constantly need to back up and delete -> install new configurations -> play new configuration/test -> back up -> restore previous -> repeat each time I'd like to switch, update, etc. Are there any concerns associated with doing so aside from limited HDD space (currently not an issue) from redundant files, such as save game problems, or other details I'm not considering? Thanks!
Feliks Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 If I understand you right this will work but with some serious constraints. You'll have to reconfigure all of the ini files You'll need to install duplicates of all the mods you're working with You won't be able to access saves from one install without first moving them to the saves folder in the documents directory, every time you switch installations Those are the big ones. Otherwise I know multiple installs work, I've got separate ones for New Vegas, FO3, Skyrim, and I'll be adding another for Oblivion and Fallout 4 pretty soon I wager. Although if I understand, What might do you better would be to reinstall the mods with special configurations with a new name, so you'll have two different configurations of it in MO and use the profiles feature to switch.
lordhalmar Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I just transferred all my daughters mods and her saves into her own version of MO. Since it is a duplicate I had to direct it to all the correct places for the start again. Like the SKSE start option in the new version wasn't pointing to the correct file to start at first. And it let me run the saves I had transferred to it. Now i don't have to worry about her activating the wrong mod.

I'm not sure what you mean by what's in green. For the game, or for MO/mods? I'm aware of the rest. I'd rather just keep things separate as a means of isolating everything to reduce any kind of conflicts at all, and so that I don't accidentally remove anything important down the road while trying to trim down on mod lists. I'm also not a fan of the clutter of all of the mods displaying for all profiles this way. I just transferred all my daughters mods and her saves into her own version of MO. Anything I should look out for if also trying to do this/what difficulties did you experience while setting this up?
Feliks Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I mean MO stores all your ini files for the game by profile, so a new installation means new profiles means new ini files and configuration.
lordhalmar Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I had a profile all set up for my daughter. I just copied over her profile folder to the new installation. But otherwise yea if you didn't have a profile to copy you would just be treating it like you just installed MO for the first time. What I did is i just opened the mod folder in my new installation and a second folder with the mod list in my old installation and just copied the mods for her in the new folder from the old. It was easy but a pain at the same time. You could even transfer saves the same way if you don't have them limited to a profile. If you want to move the profile just copy the whole profile folder for the one you want into the installations profile folder.

I see. I'm not too worried about this as due to the length of the differences between configurations of what's contained within each separate installation, I had no intention of trying to continue old save data; restarting fresh for my tests would just be much easier to do, and backing up saves isn't too tricky since it's just one file that I can associate in the given MO folder. It doesn't seem like there are any issues that would cause catastrophic failure, so I'll definitely be giving this a go. I had a profile all set up for my daughter. Thanks for confirming this kind of setup can be done successfully as long as I'm careful.
halieslade Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 I did this successfully in order to work on some mods I wanted to create. I had to alter the ini files like Feliks says, and fuss a bit with FNIS but it wasn't that hard to do.

I had to alter the ini files like Feliks says, and fuss a bit with FNIS but it wasn't that hard to do. And just to clarify further, this only needs to be done if desiring duplication of existing profiles and executables? I planned on not using the same profiles/totally new saves and also performing a fresh duplicate install of executables like SKSE, FNIS, etc., within the new MO isolated from the old, as changes to these executables and the interactions they havewith my installed mods are mostly what I'm interested in working on.

My secondary install can access old saves, but the virtual folders are on a different drive. Same with my old profiles -- I only have 1 profile available in this secondary install. The rest fall under my primary MO install, which has about 140 mods already installed and working together. This arrangement simplifies my CK troubleshooting.
KristyllLascivicious Posted July 5, 2015 Author Posted July 5, 2015 I took the plunge last night and it seems to be working just fine. Thanks for everyone's help!
