Want to install Racemenu, but confused

I have always used ECE to create characters with no problems, but the mod is old and incompatible with many new mods, and the list of features in Racemenu is always growing. So I want to switch, but there's some things that I'm not sure about.

I use ECE with a custom race for one of my characters. It was modified from YgNord, so it is linked to ECE instead of a separate mod. Uninstalling ECE will remove this race and possibly destroy this character. Is there any way around this to make it work? The race is identical to the vanilla Breton, the only reason I made it is to use a custom skin texture for only this character.

Also, I know there are mods to export your character's ECE face so you can apply it to RM, but is this reliable? Nothing will be lost and the face can be further modified and it will function the same way?

I'm sorry for all these noob questions, and I know people ask this kind of thing all the time, but I have 6 characters made in ECE with many hours put into perfecting them, and I would hate to lose them. There's so many things that can break and I'm nervous about switching. I just want to be 100% this will work, or if I should forget about it.

Thank you for any help!

Exporting your head and importing it into RaceMenu is the most reliable way to switch. You can continue editing the head, though it's best to zero out all sliders in RaceMenu first, and THEN import the head shape.

ECE 1.3 or 1.4 can export heads, but I don't know how compatible those are. Otherwise you would have to use my CharGen Export script (Nexus).

I was planning to use your mod since I heard of very good results with it.

What scares me the most is this potential issue with the custom Breton race.

Is there a way to revert? As in, if I make the switches, and I screw up or it doesn't work, can it all be put back the way it was? Or is there no way back once I've started?

Or I guess the best question is, what's the ideal procedure in this case to switch from ECE to RM with 6 characters?

You can still keep YgNord without ECE conflicting with RM if you disable ECE's "CharacterMakingExtender.esp".

Oh! So I can simply disable CharacterMakingExtender, then install Racemenu on top of everything, and all will work? I assume of course I will still need to export/import the face mesh data, yes?

If so, then maybe it will be easier than I thought.

Well, never mind all this. I cannot get this to work properly at all. Everything I tried ends in disaster, so I will just stay with ECE...

SMH. Have you tried Cell's suggestion? Did just that by exporting the face mesh so that Racemenu can use it.

I did, this was the only part that worked perfectly, actually. The heads all exported fine, and imported perfectly. No problems there.

The problems are with everything else. The YgNord race I modified has several sliders missing (I'm sure this is my noobish mistake, but I don't know how to fix it), and in general for all the other characters I just can't get the body shapes to look "right". The latest XPMS with proper plugins is installed, but at least to me, the sliders seem to behave strangely.

I haven't even tried it on one of my characters who is a heavily modded vampire, which I'm afraid will be a huge headache to get working right because this character breaks anytime I try anything.

Maybe it's fixable, but it might be more trouble than it's worth and I don't want to keep bugging you guys with it.

ECE had a lot of those .tri files scattered around, but what's needed much in the transition are the following:

  • femalehead.tri
  • femaleheadchargen.tri
  • femaleheadraces.tri
