Car Fax Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I should have done this ages ago, but I want to move Skyrim out the steam directory. The reason being that Windows 8 is really anal about any files/folders located in Program Files/Program Files (x86), and If I understand correctly, it can cause problems with some games. So I have two questions: 1. Will moving the Skyrim folder cause problems due to it being a steam installation? I know this is the case for many other games. 2. Will MO allow me to re-direct it to the new location? Thanks in advance! EDIT: Looked up some info on the steam forums. Looks like the answer to question one is just as simple as re-installing the game? I'm not too certain...
Guest endgameaddiction Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Yeah, it's always best to install your games outside of program files (x86) for stability. I install my games in C: Other will maybe install it in their SSD or even in second drive. In fact it's probably best suggested to do that away from your OS and other programs. 1. I'm certain you will have to do a complete reinstall. Moving the Skyrim folder may not work. 2. If MO cannot detect Skyrim in it's directory, it's possible it may ask you to find it like other programs tend to do. I don't know this for sure.

Right, MO uses the whole "virtual data folder" thing, so I'm guessing I won't need to re-install my mods if I do move? If that's true, then I should be able to move the whole folder, considering it currently only contains SKSE and ENB files. I'd like to know what problems might occur if I DO move the folder. I mean, are negligible, or game-breaking?
Guest endgameaddiction Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Yes, that sounds right. You shouldn't have a problem with shifting over your mods folder in MO to the new directory. Which is a time saver. But are you reinstalling MO in the process as well? The problem I see is if you move the whole Skyrim directory, the .exe won't find it's location where it was installed and it might give you that missing .dll popup box. And if that's the case, I would just backup your directory (where enb and SKSE is) so you don't have to reinstall those again and paste them to the new Skyrim directory. if you're still uncertain you could always ask here http://www.loverslab.com/topic/20492-mod-organizer/page-134?do=findComment&comment=1169597

Wish me luck!

Looks like the answer to question one is just as simple as re-installing the game? I'm not too certain... Number 1.. No. It will work just fine. Number 2.. Yes. You will have to go back into MO and settings and redirect the three links that it needs and will likely have to redirect all the links for the launcher as well. After that is done MO should work just like it was in the original location. Another thing that can be done is install a new fresh MO installation start MO direct it to the game of choice (in this case Skyrim) then transfer the Mods, Downloads, Web cache, and Profiles over (might be a few others you need but I never did) and then start. Basically the same as the instructions for number 2. except you are moving the files to the new location which is using the defaults as opposed to fixing the links to the new location in MO. In either case you will likely have to fix the launcher links outside the default links. (FINIS etc) There is a main thread for MO that can help you .. I would suggest that you post any further issues on that thread for quicker response.

So now the entirety of my skyrim folder should no longer have to worry about "Access Violations" (It would give me that error while playing the game on a few occasions).
RitualClarity Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Normally people just don't install their games in the Programs folder but.. still if it works good for you. Glad to see I was able to help you.
