New Graphic Card. A GTX 970 or 960 4gb?

I am really at my limit with this question. I hope i put in in the right section and anyone can help me.

I am currently running a gtx 750ti, but i am not very satisfied, so i want to upgrade.

I had for a long time a geforce gtx 970 in mind, with a decent price range from 350 to 380 bucks.

But today i saw the gtx 960 with 4gb ram, and it seems to have the same stats as the gtx 970, and is at least 100 bucks cheaper.

Does anyone have some experience with a gtx 960 4gb? And is it much weaker than a gtx 970?

You can always check youtube and the internet for performance benchmarks and it depends on what you play. I have a 780ti which has been an awesome card but since I'm stepping up it won't work anymore and it's a power heavy card compared to the 900 series.

Here's one review but people will argue video cards till the cows come home. Just research and try to make an informed decision.

Wouldn't recommend either of them. GTX 960 is a 128 bit card and the 970 has an architectural defect (i.e. 0.5 GB of slower memory). If your budget allows, get a 980, it's currently the best single gaming card. If you don't have the money go for an AMD 290 (or 290x) from Sapphire (Vapor-x or Tri-x) which is currently the best bang for the buck. The performance difference between a 980 and a 290/290X can be as high as 20-25 FPS in certain games, but that depends on the game. In certain games (Ryse, for instance) their performance is identical.

BTW, keep in mind that models of different brands may perform differently even if they have the same GPU, in other words, not all 970s perform identically. AMD's reference cards perform significantly worse while producing more heat and noise, so you should definitely look for a card with custom cooler.

PS. 980 TI is coming out in a few weeks so you might want to wait for that (which might mean a drop in prices of the previous models).

Thanks for all of your oppinions :) (once again LL proves his great and friendly community!)

Looks like there is all over debates over the gtx 970 and 960, the only stable thing i see is really the oppinion about the gtx 980 be the best card, but currently i don't have the money for that.

I will just wait for maybe a good deal and hope for a possible price drop as mentioned by bjornk

till then i will use my gtx750ti, it is good enough for now.

The GTX970 looked like a great card when it came out, at least on paper, as it was basically a slightly crippled version of GTX980 and performed pretty close to it. But, first the coil whine issue affecting a lot of brands and then the memory issue kinda ruined it. It's still a great card to play current games and old ones at 1080p or lower resolutions as long as they don't require more than 3.5GB VRAM, but because of the memory issue and its relatively high price, I don't think anybody can recommend it as a future-proof card, as it's not.

Well, there maybe one on the horizon as of course there's a 980ti looming but we still don't have a actual date. I've heard rumors as early as later this month but who knows. I guess it's intended to be the go between the 980 and the Titan series as the 980ti is supposed to have 6gb of ram. The Titan X has 12gb and also a hefty ass price tag. But once the 980ti drops you could see 980 prices fall, I'm in a similar boat as you I want to step up as well but for me I want to past 1920 x 1080 personally. I know the hardcore people say we don't have GPU's that can run 4k but since I'm not playing Battlefield, Crysis or any first person shooter so I don't need 100fps on the 4k display I want. I'm hoping the 980ti drops and I can grab to 980's to sli. Always remember there's always gonna be a newer faster video card, it's the nature of the beast that computer gaming is...... :)
