Please help: Skyrim CTDs, reinstalling didn't work

I recently had to have my hard disk replaced, but thankfully I have a good computer guy and he was able to make an external backup before the old one died completely, so running things on the new drive is just like running things on the old drive except faster and with more storage space. That's not where things went wrong.

I download a lot of mods, and I've made merged mods with TES5Edit for things like smithing overhauls, or armor mods, or all those .esp files that only change one tiny thing in the game. Those usually run without issue, and if I do find an issue, I stop and go back and find the problem and make a new merge without that problem file. I don't merge plugins into their masters (like Northern Cardinal or Sanguine's Debauchery), even though I want to, because those mods are still in development and the merge script isn't fully ready to do such a thing. My game runs more or less fine with those.

Where I apparently went very wrong was the decision to turn a couple of my merged armor-mod .esp files into a master, so that I could use those armors in other mods without having to manually copy the texture sets, armor addons, form lists, and finally the armors themselves for every mod I wanted to use them in (and have to do it every time one of those mods updated, like Interesting NPCs). Somehow this was a terrible mistake.

I have to keep reminding myself that I know just enough about modding to royally screw things up. I also tend to forget about what I call my 'superpower': I break the unbreakable. Way back in Icewind Dale 2, I used a trainer to change my party to monsters because I was obsessed with the idea of having a half-dragon paladin, and when I started up the game, my party took two steps off the boat, my computer froze, and the next time said computer started successfully was after I'd had my hard drive wiped. In Oblivion, I had multiple and very interesting screwups, but the most memorable one was a horse that would attack deer, Daedra, the Imperial Legion, and even static objects (so I did the only sensible thing and just took him to Hackdirt and left him there, and next time I saw him he'd cut a bloody swath all the way to Fort Carmala.) I tried downloading a hunting mod for Skyrim that ended up turning my crosshair invisible even though it was still enabled, and when I asked the mod author for a version that didn't, he was very puzzled because he didn't even know you could do that.

So, after making a merged armor mod and checking, double-checking, and triple-checking that it ran without making my Papyrus cry, I used Wrye Bash's Esmify function... and because it was late at night, I forgot that I also had said file open in TES5Edit after having just run a last error check but forgot to close it. The process came to a grinding halt and the new master was locked as read-only. I thought nothing of it, closed Edit, ghosted the broken master and brought out its backup, and this time it was turned into a master just fine. I decided to test the new file in-game before making it master to anything else. I even made a new Merged Patch to account for any changes it might have made in-game.

Right after the Bethesda logo, instant CTD. So I ghosted the new master, sighed at hours of lost work, re-enabled the old .esp, and the game died again. I frowned, disabled all mods, and tried one more time, and was able to start a new game. I quit the game before even arriving at Helgen, frowned, and started enabling mods one at a time. If I'm only running a few, I can start a new character, but once I reach a certain number (or size, I don't know), I CTD before hitting the main menu.

Ever since then, this has been my Papyrus log, all 18 glorious lines of it:

Doing a google search of these terms led me to one guy's suggestion that I use Steam to change the language prefs, which would download all necessary files in a different language, and then switch back to English before playing again so if anything was missing, it would be re-downloaded in English. That didn't work. Neither did popping in my Skyrim disk and hitting Reinstall.

So... any ideas? And before you suggest PC overheating, this desktop was built for Skyrim and is housed in a Cooler Master tower with four fans and was recently dusted. I'm thinking it might be something with my Skyrim.ini or SkyrimPrefs.ini (which I forgot to backup, and now say they were last modified the day I reinstalled).

If you are crashing before the menu, that is almost always a missing master or required mod that is needed. So either you are missing something or your load order is fubared.

Testing with my small handful of mods, I'm not missing any masters. I made sure to check that. They're currently in the same load order they've always been, which has run fine.

Then it is likely missing a required mod from one the mods you do have installed. That is pretty much the only things I have seen cause a crash there. Missing mods required/masters, or load order.

Wrye Bash has this handy feature where when you enable a mod, it also auto-enables its masters so the only way that master won't load is if it's accidentally ghosted. So it's not a missing master. But to put that theory to rest:

Current (successful) load order that will allow me to get to the main menu:

Skyrim.esm

Update.esm

Dawnguard.esm

Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esm

Hearthfires.esm

Unofficial Hearthfires Patch.esm

Dragonborn.esm

Unofficial Dragonborn Patch.esm

General Stores.esm

Climates of Tamriel.esm

Chesko_Frostfall.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

[a mod I made that simply adds more General Stores activators to the game world]

SkyUI.esp

RaceMenu.esp

RaceMenuPlugin.esp

SmithingMenu.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

TES Music - Oblivion and Morrowind.esp (master: Skyrim)

Cloaks.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

Cloaks - Dawnguard.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update, Dawnguard)

Chesko_WearableLantern.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

VelvetCloaksAndRobes.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

EK_RingLimiter.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

[a couple of armor mods with no masters beyond Skyrim, Update, official DLC and unofficial patches]

P1FlyingRing.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

ForgottenMagic_Redone.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update, Dawnguard)

Animated Dragon Wings. esp (master: Skyrim)

Alternate Start.esp (masters: Skyrim, Update)

I keep trying a few more mods at a time (like SexLab plugins and their masters), and for the most part I'm having good luck. However, attempting to add a single house mod which I built and has no masters beyond the official DLC, the unofficial patches, and General Stores.esm, made it crash. (Maybe that one's just broke. I'm still going through the list.)

As I said before, when I reinstalled Skyrim, I forgot to backup my Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files, so they were overwritten with the defaults. I can't remember if there are any changes I need to make to those but I'm thinking probably. Something about memory and endless loading screens?
