A couple of small problems LPKxt and MBP++

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hello,

I've spent some time reading many, many posts and threads and haven't found an answer I'm seeking.

So, I'm hoping that A ) I didn't miss the answer and B ) someoene can shed some light on these issues.

Lovers PK extender

The manual that gets added to the inventory is in an unreadable text.

I did find in the Lovers PK extender thread the translations someone left, but I was wondering if there's something I can or should do, or did wrong, to fix that?

MPB ++, et al.

After following the instalation instructions to the best of my ability, then deleting the full install and starting over again much more slowly this time, I still have a minor issue:

Several of the races still show up with illedgable characters/text. Like the above problem, I don't know if it's something I've missed, installed, etc.

I know the MPB++ isn't Lovers, but I installed MPB in relations to lovers so I figured this might be an issue that is known of and, as such, included it here, and also as it's text related like the LPKxt.

For reference, I have used BOSS for the load order.

I have not run the incompatability as I intend to install some additional mods after I tackle this issue.

Thank you for any assistance.

Lovers with PK and MBP are both Japanese made mods.  Some text has just never been translated.  Other than taking the time to translate it, there is nothing you can do.  It causes no harm at all, beyond the small annoyance of not being able to read the text.

Posted

A combination of Egg Translator and TES4Edit can be used to make the translations, sometimes. With Windows XP and Vista it was fairly easy, but Microsoft managed to muck up the language encoding recognition in at least Win7, not sure about Win8 since I've avoided using it.

I can tell it is a bloody pain in the arse to try and do it in Win7 now. You have to install the xtra language packs and then enable it through the Regional settings in Windows, and then Windows will start displaying other program dialog boxes and popups in those languages; Russian, Japanese, Chinese. So I often will do my translations in batches and then turn off the extra Regional settings in Windows, so I'm not having to read another language other than English for my normal apps.

Bottom line is it can be a huge effort to do the translations, depending on your knowledge/ability of Windows, which version you have, and your ability to set up and use Egg Translator, for so little return on something that doesn't really affect game-play, as gregathit pointed out above.

Varenne, have you had a look at this tool yet :

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/29457

It's hosted on the Skyrim Nexus, but also handles FNV, TES3 and TES4.

While I can't vouch for how efficient it would be in the hands of a real translator, I've successfully used it to compare different versions of mods in the past. I was pretty satisfied by it.

ljacquard can the program handle foreign Fonts ? Japanese Russian Chinese ?

I see only French, italian german english data bases ( and that I can translate with Tes4Edit. = copy and translate with Google)

And varenne: I use Egg Translator with Win7 without Regional settings in Windows.

Egg Translator can not switch between languages ( with Win7) , so I have installed several Version and put in only one data base. ( e.g. only russian if I translate a russian Mod)

Works for me. I never changed any Windows Settings.

No, I haven't. I don't have Skyrim so very rare I'm ever in that forum. If I ever get motivated to do any translations again I'll take a look at it.

Which version of Win7? I'm using Ultimate and it is much harder than I remember when I did them in XP or Vista using Egg, but especially Chinese.

I'll have to try that; use just one database. I think I have all of them installed.

Okay, just figured something out, based on what what you provided fejeena. I have to know what the originating language is; Japanese, Chinese and then open and select it in Egg. Like you said, "Egg Translator can not switch between languages ( with Win7)" so it makes a bit harder to get translations done. No auto-decoding, based on encoding which is a real bummer.

The two major version of Chinese, Traditional and Simplified are the hardest, along with some rare dialects. I've also run into on some very rare occasions odd Russian dialects that don't translate all that well via Google.

I used to also use Notepad++ and the encoding/decoding feature it has, but even that doens't work right in Win7 Ultimate any more.

@Fejeena

Looking at the mod page on the Nexus, there are English <-> French, English <-> German, English <-> Spanish and English <-> Italian databases.

If I open one of the xml files, I don't see any special header that could force a specific character set probably needed for Japanese and Chinese languages. ISO-8859-1 yes, but UTF-8 I am not sure.

I am going to do a quick test, and report back.

EDIT : Well, it looks like it's possible for Japanese (probably the same for Chinese?), provided your xml has an UTF-8 encoding :

In Notepad++, my file appears with "ANSI as UTF-8" in bottom right corner.

I have Win7 (64Bit) Home Premium.

With XP i had all data bases in one Egg Translator Installation. Now I have installations for each language.

Yeah, that is starting to sound like too much work. I may if I'm feeling motivated look at Applocale mentioned by Slammer64. I've set that up a number of times in that past for playing Japanese games.

@ ljacquard - What version of Windows are you using this Skyrim app in?

Posted

Oblivion and that tool are currently installed on my WinXP machine.

I would be (very) surprised if it ran any differently on a Win7 or higher system.

It does require .NET 4 (or 4.5) however, according to the author :

I forgot to mention that the . Net Framework 4.0 (or 4.5 ?) is necessary. Maybe that's the reason ? I don't have access to a Windows XP to test, sorry.

EDIT : Just to clarify, the app does not depend on Skyrim at all. It runs independent of any game, and seems even able to translate for old Infinity Engine games, like Planescape Torment.

For those interested in a bit more of the technical details going on here is but one link: Windows 7 UTF-8 and Unicode you can skip down to the short explanation at heading Bush hid the facts.

Any way, odds are I'll never do another translation of any Oblivion files any way. Much too tedious and prone to error for my level of patience these days...

Thank you, everyone, for your responses.

Now knowing that I've probably installed everything correctly, the rest is just cosmetic and I can live with that.

In the future, if I ever need to get some piece of translated due to game play reasons, like some written clue, I may return to this subject. Otherwise, I'm all good on these points.

And, yeah, from what I read, I see it trying to translate will be a pain. I, too, am running Win7U and I need no additional headaches. :)

Thanks again.
