Vinomadd Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Good morning Lover's Lab, long time fan, first time writer. So please be encouraged to speak to me like I'm a child, you really can't take anything for granted here. My apologies, and my gratitude, in advance! So! The trouble I'm experiencing is that I'm having semi-random freezing in-game. I've spent days researching this, following tutorials and reconstructing my MO setup according to S.T.E.P. and Gopher's videos, so I don't know if these problems are all related or if I'm having numerous issues. The most common form of freeze I get is one where all sound except the background music goes silent for about 30 seconds in which time I can move but any interactions seem to be not happening. After this 30 second period one of two things happens: Either the game suddenly plays catch up and there's this din of sound effects of the spells or actions I've taken all playing at once and the effects they should have on the world suddenly happening, OR the game hangs entirely. Furthermore, when it hangs entirely it usually recovers after as long as a minute, but occasionally it does not and I must restart my computer. The other "type" of freezing I'm experiencing is similar. It seems to happen as I"m walking around the world. It's minimally reproducible and can happen as rarely as once an hour or as frequently as once every 4 or so minutes! It comes without warning and in fact the game plays great between freezes. I've noticed headed to Solitude via Rorikstead, I often get a hang at Rorikstead, and again I tend to get one as I'm headed over the mountains and down the valley to the river in front of Solitude though it can happen virtually anywhere indoors or out and apparently at random times.Yet a third type of freezing happens when I click the favorites menu. It does not happen all the time and I don't know whether it's a problem with the menu itself or just somehow exacerbating the previous two problems but when it happens it's instant. It also happens occasionally when I click the action button to talk to someone. Again, no sound issue (background music does continue to play though) and the game just is instantly and entirely unresposnive. When the freeze hangs up indefinitely, I do not appear to have any control of my computer normally. I cannot Ctrl,Shift,Escape to get to my task manager, nor can I Alt,Tab to switch windows. However, when I attempted running SKSE/TESV.EXE/Mod Organizer all in Windows VIsta SP2 Compatability Mode I noticed I did have a degree more interaction with my desktop in that I was able to Alt,Tab and could in fact open the Start Screen, Task Manager, etc. However, whenever I'd try to actually click on a button or tab in any of those windows, the frozen Skyrim game just popped up so again I was never able to actually close the game to resume normal WIndows behavior. This lead me to believe it's a problem specifically with the game and not so much my PC, though I'll leave that for better minds to decide. Strangely, NEVER has the game crashed to desktop. It either recovers, or just never does. -------------------------------------WHAT STEPS I'VE TAKEN ------------------------------------- When I decided to try modding my game, I knew I was ignorant of how things work so I sought an ordered guide and came to this steam community post, http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=227161271. I followed this pretty closely as you can see from my mod list. I clearly screwed it up the first time I tried it so I reinstalled the game clean and started over, this time following said S.T.E.P. installation guides/videos and Gopher's videos. My Mod Organizer install has a seperate FNIS launcher, LOOT, SKSE, SkyrimEXE and TESVEdit drop down. I've followed the STEP guide in setting the DATA folder during installation of archives. I've followed Gopher's video, I think, about how to clean mods as per LOOT's recommendation and everything went exactly as the video showed it would, save for 5 files that apparently couldn't be deleted.Initially I tried using old saves (I hated to lose the characters I'd already playd) and even used a save file cleaner which removed hundreds of entries from my original attempt at modding (I had tried a few other mods that first time, installing and uninstalling at random having not known that would be detrimental to the save). I also tried a fresh, brand new game with the second, more competant MO build and unfortunately the problem persists in exactly the same fashion. Both the old saves and the fresh game behave exactly the same: Plays great between freezes, freezes come semi-randomly and with varying frequency.FURTHERMORE! I also followed this guide, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50244/?, as many of the numerous forum posts I read about people struggling with Skyrim crashes and freezes sounded familiar and several people had luck with this. I followed it to a T and still no impact. I have also used the recommended SKSE.ini found in Nexus Mods, having seen the video where Gopher shows that the memory package routinely has trouble loading the second package once it hits 256mb, causing freezes (I thought for sure I had the problem licked when I watched his video too. So disappoinitng.) ------------------------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFO AND CLOSING ------------------------------------------------ A few strange quirks I've noticed are that even after enabling Papyrus logging in both the Documents and Steam Slyrim folders, the "log" folder and said logs have never shown up. I've checked to make sure EVERYTHING involving the game, MO and the files individually are set to run as administrator and not Read Only. I also noticed Skyrim's INI file was ridiculously sparse. I see there are different ini setups for different people but mine had like 6 lines so I triggered a recreation of the Documents Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini. No luck, no further problems either. In conclusion, I've spent days trying to trouble shoot this using high quality tutorials and trusted sources. I've rebuilt this thing from scratch and come to peace with the fact that my old saves are probably lost to me now. Live and learn. But after everything I've made exactly 0 progress. Nothing I've done has had a positive impact on the problem, which leads me to believe I must have something wrong witht he way I've set up the mods. I am at my wits end and I genuinely believe I've done my due diligence up to this point in trying to solve this problem of my own accord. So I come to you, Loverslab, in the hopes I'll find some kind heart who's taken no arrows to the knee and is willing to help a poor milk drinker with his ruined game. Thank you to anyone with the courtesy to read this book of a post and who may consider my problem. I'll gladly furnish any further information you need, pending dummy instructions on how to procure it.Thank you again, everyone.
Rynnes Master Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I don't see any memory plug-in/add-ins in your load order, Vino. First, you should be running SKSE, now at 1.7.2. Get it at http://skse.silverlock.org/if you don't already have it. Make sure you have a SKSE.ini file that includes the memory patch enabled; thusly, [Loader]RuntimeName=TESV.exe[General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1[Display]iTintTextureResolution=2048[Memory]DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768ScrapHeapSizeMB=256 Next, install the ENBoost memory program, even if you don't use an ENB. You can get it at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/38649/?. You don't need to run an ENB preset to take advantage of the memory asistance ENBoost provides. Next, install Cell Stabilizer (41592) and SafetyLoad (46465). If you don't have these items installed, with a modded game freezes are almost a certainty. In Mod Organizer, in addition to your load order (using LOOT, aren't you?), you also need to pay attention to the priority of your mods shown in the left pane of MO; adjust to control what overwrites what. Each load order is different so some trial and error will be necessary to reach the optimum result. Also consider creating a Merged Patch using TES5Edit and a Bashed Patch using WryeBash. There are excellent video tutorials on both by Gopher and GamerPoet on YouTube. Both Gopher and GamerPoets have videos on installing SKSE in ModOrganizer; I personally follow GamerPoet's videos to the letter. Hope this helps you.

I have both SKSE (with the things you said in the INI) and ENBoost. Like I said, I followed that memory tutorial I linked to in my post to the letter. I mentioned both these things in the post. "Using Loot aren't you?" Did you actually read the post? It's long because I was purposefully thorough for the purposes of eliminating unecessary debate. Recommending beta builds over stable releases is not a good practice for obvious beginners. TL;DR- I apreciate anyone's help, but do not reply if you did not read the thread.
srayesmanll Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 You seem to have a very bare bones installation, and yet you are having one of the issue that I have - sounds play "catch up". I started having this issue after I installed Immersive Sounds mod ( http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/54387/?). I noticed that you do not have this mod listed in your load listing, so that is not the culprit in your case. However, I do remember now that about the same time I added IS, I also started using the HDT stuff (just the bounciness, no collision then, and no hair), and this seems to be the only things I see in you setup that are in mine (not including dlc and the uskp family of patches). I wonder - if you disable the HDT stuff in your setup, do you still experience the sound issue? As for complete freezing, I have experienced this with and without mods, with and without HDT, etc. Using the memory patch in SKSE and using ENBoost (I don't use a full ENB) seem to have diminished CTDs and freezes to nearly none, but still it crops up occasionally. Sorry I don't have more specific help than that, so maybe someone else has some better suggestions. Couple notes: 1) Looks like you've cleaned the DLCs, but Dawnguard does require a second pass with cleaning - first pass reveals additional ITMs (6 usually) that a second pass cleans up. 2) As 352 mentioned, you might want to go up to SKSE 1.7.2 (you load order info at the top lists 1.7.1). Don't think it will solve your issues, but some of the recent mods require 1.7.2 rather than 1.7.1. And don't let the "beta" moniker on 1.7.2 put you off. The silverlock guys tend to leave things marked as "beta" or even "alpha" much longer than they need to be.
Vinomadd Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 UPDATE:The plot thickens. I've installed the recommended stability updates and configured them according to trusted sources. The problem persists, however it's given my game enough stability to be able to alt tab out of it when these freezes occur. This has been very useful though it's only brought up new questions. At this point I'm not sure skyrim or its mods are even the problem. I noticed the freezing in-game coincides with a %100+ spike in harddrive usage, every single time. I cannot tell what is actually using the drive or whyit's so thoroughly exhausting it. It's a 7200 rpm toshiba drive, only a few months old. Chkdsk reports no errors, I've heard none of the tell tale ginds and clicks that frequently comes with mechanical failure.I've run a number of monitors and checks to rule out other factors. What I can say is temperatures of my GPU, disk, and CPU are fine. My gpu never spiked above 52 dgree. CPU load never once got up past %20, Ram usage never past %34. My little entry level gaming PC in theory should be chewing up Skyrim alive.Sadly, a lengthy google inquiry into the matter turns up any numer of problems with windows 8.1 and disk usage. I've had most of these things done already and indeed it sheds light on some other peculiarities I've had with windows (browers freezing when I click on a tab to switch between web sites, clicking a button in some windows menu only to have the whole compute hangup, etc etc) I've used CCleaner to tend to my registry, disbaled various functions and security programs...I just don't know what more to say.Does anyone know of any Skyrim specific issues and fix related to disk usage? I know my computer is far from beasty but it well exceeds the maximum recommendations set by Bethesda. I have a hard time believing this is just how the game functions normally.
