MikeJones84 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I believe the Far Cry's use MoCap and some advanced facial expression technology. Is there anything better out there? I haven't actually played any games of this new generation so I wouldn't know.
MikeJones84 Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 That's pretty impressive. Is that all real time in-game or cutscenes only?
blabba Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Pretty much every AAA games these days use mocap animation. Skyrim was based off of mocap as well: http://www.elderscrolls.com/community/big-mountain-climb-animating-skyrim/ That being said for facial animations, there's 2 ways that it gets implemented in--game. 1. Using the old vertex animation trick, the pro to this is you get absolute control of the face and can recreate higher quality facial expressions if your source mesh is high enough on the vertex count. Con's are it's time consuming to implement and your usually stuck with very few source head types. 2. Using the standard Bone and Weighting trick, the pro to this it's a lot faster (Once you have the rig setup) and you can transfer expressions between different source head types more easily. Cons are you don't get as much control as you do with vertex animations. As for games with good facial expressions, I recently played Ryse and gotta say that my character's facial expressions were very realistic (not to mention the awesome skin shader....)
D_ManXX2 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 If skyrim was really mocap they need to fire there animators. And hire better once.
