Tompa987 Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Hello. I have a problem that I can't seem to find a solution to, I hope someone could help out a noob like me. I'm trying to replace the sound effect for discovering a new location with a custom sound file. I have extracted the original .bsa and checked so that my files are using the exact same name, and are placed in the exact same place (skyrim / data / music / mus_discover_genericlocation_01-03). I have converted my own wave-files to .xwm format using xWMAEncode.exe. But in-game, the default sound is played instead of my files! I was wondering, is there a specific format that the .wav files need to be in before I convert them to .xwm files? I did have a replacer for this sound a long time ago that I deleted, so I know it CAN work. But it seems I'm doing something wrong this time.... Any help would be really nice, as this is driving me absolutely crazy!
Alpia Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Well I don't exactly know how to do that, but I know the files just have to be xwm files as you allready know and if the default files are running you obviously don't have them replaced if you had them replaced with yours they can not play since they are just not there anymore. So you either did not replace the correct files Or you did not save your work Thats the only thing that could be if you would have replaced them correct the old files are not existing anymore therefore can not play.
myuhinny Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I have used a fuz extractor before to change the files from .fuz form to regular sound files then went through the sounds/voices till I found the ones that I wanted to change then renamed the replacer file/files to the name of the one that I wanted to replace then used the fuz extractor to fuz them back up.
Tompa987 Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Thanks for the replies. But the files are replaced, as I typed, they're in the right place and i copy-pasted the names that were in the .bsa file called "Music". And renamed my own files with those names. Am I right that Skyrim first looks in my computers files (skyrim / data / music / mus_discover_genericlocation_01-03), and after that Skyrim looks in the .bsa archive?
myuhinny Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Loose files in a skyrim folder will always trump files in a BSA that is how some of the armor replacers work. Install the replacer and the files in it will trump the ones in the BSA so that the replacer is the one that appears in game.
Tompa987 Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Ok, thanks, it is as I expected then. I've been trying everything now (I think?), from changing bitrates on the files, adding access rights to the files.... shortening the length of the audio files. Still, nothing seems to work. I just get the normal sound when I discover a new location. What bugs me even more is I know I once had a cool replacer that I made myself that worked... what am I missing?
Tompa987 Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 I finally solved it. I'll post what worked for me here. I stumbled across an old forum post somewhere that mentioned that Audacity might not be the best to convert .wav files to .xwm, and that seems to have been the problem for me. I found a mod on the Nexus called "MultiXWM" ( http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3159/? )and when I used that program to convert my .wav files to .xwm, the sounds played in Skyrim as they should. Thanks again for the replies.
