Fallout 3 won't start

As the title says Fallout 3 won't start. I get to the launcher but as soon as I press play nothing happens (Well something does happen, the razer game booster stops boosting my game.) I know for a fact that it's not a mod doing anything (since I have no mods installed) so I honestly don't know what's causing this problem.

I use the option found under

All operating systems - Verify integrity of game cache

You can also install FNVedit and it will show if there is something wrong ( in the future ) when you install mods.

Likely the load order is wrong. Check the advised load order for FO3 or use LOOT. Install and run.

I used LOOT to check the load order, it gave me the correct load order but still the game wouldn't start.

edit: The cache verification thing didn't work.

Long shot. Try using windowed mode. Might just be an OS thing. I had that a long time ago and not sure why or how i fixed it. I do remember playing with the various mods selected during the start. After the first start it worked just fine.

I've tried that as well, but I might as well keep trying. If it is an OS thing that's another black mark against Windows 8 for me.

I had an issue with "GamesForWindowsLive" with fallout 3 the first time I wanted to start it, I don't know if this is a problem due to it but I don't remember exactly the way to fix it ( I did install GFWL 3.5 and I'm not sure It was working right after I did it but I was looking for this problem on internet)

One of my friend had the same issue with windows 8, and couldn't play on his computer also and I couldn't help him even if I was looking on his computer, he hadn't the same problem and I couldn't solve it.

I recommend checking the Windows Event Viewer Application log for any errors relating to the issue.  If nothing stands out there, might try an update of the audio and graphics drivers and from there a clean startup (msconfig) to rule out conflicts.

I guess hardly anyone really "reads" or pays attention to what the OP is asking and saying. So I see here from your post that Razer Game Booster is shutting down and your game fails to load past the point where you select either a saved game or start a new game. My experiences with Razer and associated optimization products from AMD have never done well with setting up my system to run any particular game. I would suggest getting rid of Razer Game Booster and any other application that "sets up" your video card with an "optimized" set of variables.

The other advise given on here is also a reasonable approach after you have eliminated Razer, etc. Use FO3Edit to see if it will load all your mods without halting on an error.

Next I would "Disable Desktop Composition". This is done by right clicking on the file Fallout.exe, choose the "Compatibility" tab and select the check box next to "Disable Desktop Composition". Fallout 3 was designed to run without the "AERO" desktop theme that comes standard on Windows Vista and 7. If your running on Windows 8, than you need to disable the "Metro" interface with a program like "ClassicShell".

Let me know if any of this helps, if not we can try some other things, also if I have some idea of what your system specifications are and what mods you are running, if any, this might help narrow down the problem some.

Actually the razer game booster is shutting down after I select play from the launcher. But I'll try the rest of your advice.

Okie Dokie, I will try and hang out here a while to see how you are getting along with it.

Here is the link to Classic Shell, it brings back the good old windows desktop and gives you a start button in the shape of a blue sea shell.

cary.. I think the areo was what was giving me the trouble before... now that I remember.. :D. It has been so long since I had to reload the entire game from start. ( use the copy from before with verify cache. ) On a separate note Razor never really caused me trouble unless I asked it to do things that it really couldn't do. this the first time I heard of that. Oh well I am using nVidia now so no need for me to concern myself over that.. :) Useful info for future .

FO3edit didn't work, the program wouldn't start because I have no .ini (because I can't start the fucking game to get the fucking .ini)

metro is already disabled (and has been since before I even tried to install FO3 on this laptop.)

And I can't find the compatibility tab when I right click Fallout.exe.

I don't use 8 so I don't know however on 7 you have to click on Properties first to be able to get to the various tabs including compatibility. That being said Steam Fo3 freshly installed on my system win7 x64 works right out of the box. No settings changed. I can get to the screen and do my thing. No crashes.

Have you tried going to the F03 folder and clicking on the launcher? That gives you some settings to use before you start the game. Much like Skyrim's launcher. Oh and there was no prompting for Windows live. Using the Steam version. The disk version likely will still require windows live ..

I found the error, Anchorage is above Fallout 3 for some reason. And the game still won't start despite putting it back to where it needs to go. The launcher also crashes when I try to start the game in windowed mode.

You need Games for Windows Live installed.  Assuming that you installed FO3 off of steam.  I had the same problem a couple week's back - running Win8, just clicked the play button either on the launcher or in FOMM and it did absolutely nothing.  The linked post below from the Steam Support Site was where I got the download link for a working copy of Winlive's thing.  Just install it, and then curse Microsoft for Windows 8, poor portability, and whatever else you feel like venting about.  (Then make sure you do the .ini fix as well or you'll get frustrated again)

That is strange jonas. I don't have windows live garbage or any program that stops that and I just installed it. The download was from about the middle of August. Used a backuped image of FO3 using Steams backup function. It gave me no problems both during the beginning installations ( before the backup) and now. I am however using Win7 not Win8

Oh yea thanks jonas. that link reminded me that FOSE also stops that windows live garbage as well. On that link it shows the windowed mod option to fix it as well. :D. I didn't have to either of them. However the third thing which I had forgot besides the FOSE is the Net version really matters with this game. Perhaps you don't have the correct version. ?

@ritualclarity - I didn't need to do that with Win7 either.  It seems to be an issue exclusive to Win8.  Another reason it's the worst OS I've ever used.  (There are many reasons).

Yeah you've got that right.

I am glad you finally got it sorted out, I had considered a Windows Live issue, but since Windows Live is no longer working I discarded it, apparently there are still residual effects from it's demise. I run a computer and IT consulting firm here and I am a certified partner with Microsoft, but I flat out told Microsoft Partner Group I would not support Windows 8. You would think Microsoft learned it's lesson with Windows Vista, apparently not. If you think Windows 8 is terrible, wait until you see Windows 9!

Dam.. They fixed the issue and then screwed it up again? What the hell. I will be keeping this in mind for the future when something like this changes again. One reason not to use Win8. However at least if you install FOSE it is suppose to get rid of the windows live crap. However I think you need to activate the dam thing at least once.. hence the need for it for at least that one time..

Dam you Microsoft. I thought you were improving things..
