darkconsole Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 has anyone had issues getting custom cubemaps to work? i've sucessfully made diffuse and normal maps that work just fine. i took one of the default cubemaps that come in skyrim and recoloured it, saved it as my own via photoshop with nvidia's dds plugin. if i copy the default cube i stole and name it as mine, it loads on the model, but if i open and resave it in photoshop, it stops loading. like i've said, none of the other textures i've created has had this issue. just cubemaps. i've tried all the choices from dx1 to 5, nogo.
sen4mi Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Does your save process change the size of the cube map? (Cube maps are strange things and getting a file that is exactly the same size might be a good first step to making sure you are saving the right kind of file...)
darkconsole Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Does your save process change the size of the cube map? (Cube maps are strange things and getting a file that is exactly the same size might be a good first step to making sure you are saving the right kind of file...) file size, yes, x and y sizes, no. it breaks if even if all i do is open the cubemap and save it right back with no changes. it makes me think there is a special set of choices i need to make in the nvidia dds tool.
sen4mi Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Does http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/CubeMap#Photoshop and/or http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=tutorial&name=cubemaps help you any? If not, maybe you could try contacting the author of http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/6152/? (That tutorial does not seem to mention cube maps, but whoever that is seems to know what they are doing. ... of course ... if that is you, then this will not be much help...) Edit: fixed link
darkconsole Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 interesting. "The DDS format does not actually store the images in a horizontal layout... each image is stored as a separate layer or slice in the DDS file. The Nvidia plugin merely lays them out horizontally to make the cubemap easier to edit in Photoshop." which is exactly how photoshop opens and how im willing to bet it is resaving it. thanks for the resources, i've a feeling a solution is closer now.
darkconsole Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 yep, got it figured out. it turns out i was trying way too hard. i was clicking all the buttons playing with all the checkboxes. the answer was right there on the main screen. there is a label that says "2d texture" and it did not register that that was a drop down... one of which is "cube map" such a long way to go for such a simple thing. thanks a lot, learned a few things from those that should be useful.
