Weird thing happening when loading saves

Recommended Posts

So, this issue just randomly popped up one day, and I don't know what in the world is causing it. Skyrim takes three tries before it'll load a save, the first two times result in it crashing as soon as the loading screen goes away. To make this simpler it goes like this

1. Load save, Skyrim crashes as soon as loading screen vanishes.

2. Open Skyrim again, load same save. Skyrim crashes after loading screen.

3. Open Skyrim yet again, load same save, Skyrim loads and everything plays smooth from there.

Everytime it takes exactly three times to load the save. Once the save is loaded, Skyrim runs smooth with no unusual CTD's or anything. I can't for the life of me figure out which mod/mods might be causing this. Mod list:

1. Hearthfire
2. Dragonborn
3. RaceCompatibility
4. Foxhome_X
5. SGHairPackBase
6. Climates of Tamriel
7. RaceMenuOverlays
8. RaceMenuPlugin
9. Pinup Poser
10. DemonHunterV2 Armor
11. SkyUI
12. RaceMenu
13. Diamond Weapons
14. Climates of Tamriel Interiors - Warm
15. AMB Glass Variants Lore
16. DemonHunterArmor
17. Climates of Tamriel Sound
18. Differently Ebony
19. Fox31 armor
20. DemonHunter_Scarf
21. HarvestFeathers
22. ImmersiveFP
23. Realistic Water Two
24. Aurora and Twilight Followers
25. Ultimate Follower Overhaul
26. Realistic Water Two - Waves
27. Realistic Water Two Dragonborn
28. The Ningheim
29. Braith follower
30. SGHairPackAIO
31. Witch of the Wild
32. Skyrim Shadow Striping Fix
33. Equipping Overhaul
34. Silverfish Grotto
35. Dragonbone Barbarian Armor
36. The Eyes of Beauty
37. Live Another Life
38. Watercolor for ENB for Realistic Water Two
39. Wulfharth's Dragonbone Weapons
40. Seasons of Skyrim Project
41. Seasons of Skyrim Summer
42. Seasons of Skyrim CoT Patch
43. AmidianBorn Book of Silence
44. SKSE 1.7.1
45. HDT Phyics 14.28
46. XP32 Skeleton
47. UNP Body

Note that this was happening before I installed Seasons of Skyrim or Dragonbone weapons so neither of them are to blame

I cannot give any recommendation to fix it but can advice workaround (that you may did it already).

At main menu, instead of loading latest save - try to load a starting save (right after character creation, with minimum mod possible) and after system load fine just load your latest save.

Alternative, at main menu - type "coc ctest" or "coc qasmoke".  Wait a few seconds after game load and load your prefer save.

"One thing that may help is the "DisablePreloadtoVRAM" flag,  Boris says "but very useful when saved game won't load because of too much data in cells (imho simpler just to set lower quality, go to other place to save)."  Setting to false can mean faster load times because objects are not created when game is loading - instead they are only made when the camera can see them.  Downside is some possible stuttering as you are then loading the objects after the saved game has loaded and started.  However it can help with loading saved games due to memory issues because the objects won't be loaded as part of the save and hence not as much memory needed."

I do think it's a memory issue, because before it crashes the world is loaded because I can hear waterfalls, footsteps, etc. for a split second. Once in the temple of mara it actually loaded the interior before crashing instead of just a black screen.

This always happen to me, sometimes it takes only 1 load and sometimes 2-3. Even on new characters (with 100+ mods), it will still CTD Load on occasions.

Yea I have this issue a lot as well. Mainly in interior areas with a lot of objects, mid-fight saves and when a dragon is flying around.

Load a test cell as soon as you open the game (coc qasmoke) then load your desired save game from there. Works for me 100%

I tell you what is even more weird and I have tested this a few times. So every time I will save 'twice' and when I come back to play, I will only CTD on the newest save (2nd save) and loads fine on the first save.

McCheesyBirdMess: your character's level? Size of your last save?

Character is level 8. Save file size is about 6 MB last I checked. 20 hours

That's good. It means your save isn't bloated (by Papyrus).

(your low level is surprising, though -- so many problems or so much mod testing?)

A solution given here may seem awkward but it works.Here's something even more awkward: don't use "Continue" in the main menu.

You didn't say anything about using the memory patch (SKSE 1.7+ or SSME).

I had a similar problem, I don't know if u play full screen or windowed, but ever since i switched to windowed mode, I hardly ever CTD, in fact i don't think i've ever ctd since i did. No idea why it worked so well for me but it did.

Having too many savegames in your savegames slot will also increase the chance that savegame will crash on load. There are several things that could cause this:

1 is what i already mentioned to many save games.

2. script heavy mods who all needs to load before the game start will also cause crashes on load.

3 bad ini tweaks could also increase the crashes on save game loads.

4. an older version of hdt was also causing this bug for me previously.

@Androktone If you're wondering why my hours are high and my level is low, this character is an RP which I haven't left Whiterun or the surrounding areas much. Mainly I just do "Kill this bandit" quests, but most hours I'm just wondering around the city. Also I do have SKSE 1.7.1, I read somewhere the memory patch is in it but I may be wrong.

@clubsauce Tried windowed mode, still crashed the first two times. Though once in windowed mode it loaded on the first try.

@D_ManXX2 I never have more than 5 save games at a time, I don't think that's too many but it could be. I don't think any of the mods I listed are really script heavy, but then again I know very little of scripting. My only .ini tweaks were the ones instructed by Gameplay Performance ENB. The HDT thing is possible cause I too had an issue with an older version doing this on an older character.

The memory patch doesn't work automatically. You need to switch it on in Data/SKSE/skse.ini.

It could be something like this:

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Display]
iTintTextureResolution=1024

[Debug]
WriteMinidumps=0

[Interface]
EnableContainerCategorization=1

[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

So I can confirm the coc quasmoke trick works. Since I thought my game was pretty stable now, I tried out the Skybirds mod (it's adds dynamic birds) but I was crashing every 30 minutes. So I ditched that mod lol I like ambience but not crashing.

So this problem is pretty much solved, even though it'd be nice to figure out a way without qasmoke. I can live with it though until it becomes time for a brand new skyrim install.
