CTD & Other Problems When Loading a Save

I'm getting either a CTD or some graphical problems when I load saves of my new character, playing on a fresh install of everything using Mod Organizer.

I'm inside the rented room at the Inn in Riverwood (door open), and it happens shortly after I load my save if I either wait idle long enough or attempt to turn/rotate the camera around. I can go into menus like the inventory, map, MCM, settings, Quest, etc. just fine, but if I just stand idle long enough (maybe 5-10 seconds max) or attempt to turn around, it CTDs.

I have enabled Papyrus logging in the skyrim.ini...

[Papyrus]

fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0

bEnableLogging=1

bEnableTrace=1

bLoadDebugInformation=1

...but can't find the log file(s) anywhere.  :-/

I was able to load saves for this character just fine prior to exiting the starting room for Alternate Start-Live Another Life, and I can load one of them from just outside the gate at Helgen. Although that causes another, grahpical problem:

I can also then actually load the save that was causing the CTD as described above without it crashing, but the same graphical problem persists when I go outside:

Aside from the weird blocky-cloudy-thingys in those pics, my character's hair is also black, when it should be a light reddish-brown color.

If anyone could help me figure out where to find the papyrus logs I'll be happy to post it. In the meantime, here is my current load order (as sorted by MO/LOOT):

Did you use the MOs feature of "Fix Mods". I am assuming that you reworked and changed some things in MO. (fresh install) .. Might be you are missing some resources. I don't know that much about Skyrim to help further. It is a simple check. Open Saves, right click on the save in question and select fix mod. Then you will see if something is missing. Replace that then you at least know that your mods related to the save is there.

Assuming you're running the game on a desktop, is your video card(s) running hot? Are your heatsinks and fans free of dirt? From your pics, it looks like you're getting artifacts so it might be a good idea to make sure you're not having a heat problem. Worst case scenario is your video card is on the way out.

Posted

I would hope it's not on its way out, I just bought it in January. On that note, though, my hardware monitor (Open Hardware Monitor) says its at 51*C at the moment (just sitting idle watching youtube vids).

Edit: Just fired up the save that doesn't CTD (the one from the first screenshot) and ran around a little bit. Still the same graphical issues (the gray-white blocky stuff, and my characters hair being black). Immediately after exiting the game my hardware monitor says the GPU core peaked at 75*C. It also says its core load more-or-less maxed out too, though (99%), so I assume that means it's vram was being completely used up. That being said, maybe I just need to run a texture optimizer or something. I tried to go middle-range when picking out texture mods, but maybe it's still pushing things a bit too hard...

Every video card is different and you never said what you're running but myself, I'm running around 32C at idle with two 780's in SLI. In game I max at 54C - air cooled.

It might not be a bad idea to see what you're running in-game and then see if you're within specs for your card, just to be sure heat isn't the culprit.

Edit: I just saw your edit. Try running a totally vanilla game and compare your results with your modded version. That should be very easy to do with MO.

M'kay, fired up a Vanilla game with no mods nor use of SKSE (just Vanilla game + DLC and HD texture pack DLC). Hardware monitor says the GPU peaked at 60*C and at 30% load. I did not have any of the graphical issues from my other game when starting the new one (with the whole carriage ride intro scene). They also were not present when I exited the game and then reloaded that new Vanilla save game (although peak GPU load increased to 58%).

I was, however, getting this error in the top-left of my screen: "error! bFloatPointRenderTarget=1 not set in SkyrimPref.ini or you have multiple copies of this file".

Posted

Righto. Oddly, I was getting that error when I first exited the Alternate Start-Live Another Life room on my modded save as well. I then fixed that in the .ini file that MO recognizes after exiting the game.

I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but the CTD and graphical problems first appeared when loading that character's saves after changing that setting in the SkyrimPref.ini.

I had weird behaved of my game yesterday. Just like in your case, my saves CTDs. At the beginning I didn't realize what was wrong since all worked fine, no new mods installed/uninstalled etc. I cleaned my saves with save cleaner tools, reran FNIS and BOSS and Wrye several times and had no result. Then I realized two simple things  caused CTDS. 1. For some reason BOSS messed up my load (master files) order. Whatever I tried, the program couldn't sort it and even couldn't remember manually order settings.

2. Then I cleaned my Windows (+registry) and Internet temporary files with CC cleaner, and BOSS came to its senses and the game started to work again.

I'm not saying that this is a solution for you, but might try.

There are other settings besides that one that need to be modified in order for your ENB to function properly. I'd check them as well. An ENB will stress the crap out of your system but I don't think that 7870 should have a problem unless its overheating. Only you can determine that  :D .

Honestly, after determining that hardware isn't the issue and all my drivers are up to date, I'd approach this by starting with a vanilla game, install my ENB properly and verify that its working as it should. I'd then start adding mods one or two at a time, checking the game each time to see if the problem re-surfaces. When it does, you've found your problem.

I just loaded up that Vanilla save with the bFloatPointRenderTarget=1 set in the SkyrimPrefs.ini and the issue appeared there as well.

post-87824-0-30841500-1401389571_thumb.jpg

This was immediately after turning on my computer (so heat can't be the issue), and the only change I made was that bFloatPoint setting in the Vanilla profile's .ini file, so that has to be what's causing the problem somehow (at least for that specific graphical issue). Not sure about the CTD problem, though.

Edit: I just loaded up my modded save outside Helgen with the bFloatPoint setting changed back to 0 and the graphical issue was gone, so that setting is definitely what was causing it (although I'm now stuck with the error message about it in the upper-left of my screen constantly).

That said, my character's hair was still black (when it should be reddish-brown) and the save from inside the Riverwood Inn that was CTDing did still CTD, so I still don't know what the problem is there. If anyone could help me figure out how to get the crash logs for it to help find what's causing it I'd be glad to post them.

I have not, partially because I haven't looked into how to do that stuff yet, and partially because I don't see how that could fix it. It's a brand new character save (only played for about an hour, and that was just running around mostly to test FPS performance) and I have not uninstalled any mods, so there shouldn't be any orphaned scripts or anything like that to clean up.

If you think that would help I will look into it, though.

Edit: Okay, just ran this one: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/

It reported 0 scripts and 0 instances removed. I also used the button to "Reset Havok", and it did say it removed some items, but the game still CTDs from that save as described in my first post.

Ah, finally found my papyrus logs. They weren't being saved where I thought they would be.

OK. I had to ask. You know, I reinstalled my Skyrim few hours ago and listen this phenomena. New character CTDs. I was shocked. How come, I just created him. Then I realized that my game was crushing since there was a error/conflict in skeleton and some body meshes I have. When fixed that, all was perfect. Even my previous saves worked at the first load. Later on, I just cleaned them and now I enjoy in playing it a lot.

What I saw in your order list, you have numerous mods. Some of them are surely in conflict. Why don't you try disable immersive mods, some (extra) body meshes,  all DD's and environmental mods and try and see. Those type of mods are always problematic at some point.

Posted

The first thing I am seeing is you have a load order problem with CoT, and corresponding patches.

Example:

ClimatesOfTamriel.esm
...
ClimatesOfTamriel-Dawnguard-Patch.esp //if you have Dawnguard DLC
ClimatesOfTamriel-Dragonborn-Patch.esp //if you have Dragonborn DLC
Supreme Storms - Cot Version.esp
CoT-WeatherPatch.esp
CoT-WeatherPatch_DB.esp //if you have Dragonborn DLC (optional)
CoT-WeatherPatch_Snow-xx.esp //Snow brightness adjustment (optional)
CoT-WeatherPatch_SupStorms.esp //Supreme Storms patch (optional)
CoT-WeatherPatch_ESS.esp //Expanded Snow Systems patch (optional)
CoT-WeatherPatch_NLx.esp //Night level darkness plugin (optional)

Granted I do not use either of these mods, so I am kind of shooting in the dark on that one.

EDIT: Also noticed You have COT-WeatherPatch_NL1.esp, and COT Nightslevel 1.esp. not sure if you need both.

Well, I did fiddle with the load order a little bit just now (rearranged a few of the CoT esps as well as a couple Schlongs of Skyrim esps). I managed to load the CTDing save without it CTDing. I'm thinking it might have been a Schlongs issue. I was inside, so I don't think any Climate scripts would have caused any problems (plus it wasn't CTDing on the outdoor save), but there were several male NPCs in the Riverwood Inn, and a couple of the Schlong esps did look out of order.

After a another save/reload, the save is working now, although now Schlongs seems to not be working (neither of the penis-type plugins appear in SoS's MCM menu), so will likely have to re-install that.
