Cremationist Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Okay, I know the statistics of this already, but I thought I'd atlest see what's up. Okay, I know there are many (including myself.) that have little to no modding experience what so ever. Now, it's fine and dandy that there are typed out instructions to installing these mods, and a list of prerequisites that must be filled. But here is the thing, and yes, this is going to sound lazy as hell, but it's the truth. There are many out there, who even with reading it, just won't get it without a source of visual aid. Now, this is a simple question and could be a request in the future, should any individual be up to the task. Is there (Could someone make.) a installation video out on the circuit? I know it's rather daft of me, but I think it would help individuals, and yes, even I would love something like this to be brought about, figure out what exactly they are doing wrong, without all the hellish note of trial and error, reading and doing as is stated, only for it to go wrong still. Thank you in advance.
germanicus Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 You have them all written on ashal's Sexlab framework main page. The rest of the videos and tutorials you can find here: http://www.skyrimgems.com/utilities.html There is also Tutorial section on main page, and some threads have videos too. and you can google it on Youtube.
gvman3670 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 In the mod's folder you highlight, right click, copy, then go to the Skyrim/data/ folder and right click then paste. That's it. Anybody can do that. Right? And if you're using a mod manager it's even simpler.
Uhuru N'Uru Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Yes it is lazy as hell as you state and though many mods have individual installation videos the best overall general mod guide is STEP guide the key point in it's favour is it is kept up to date, the major issue with what you ask for many guides are made but frankly you'll never find one that's perfect for you and if you do unless it's been made in the last week, it's outdated STEP (Skyrim Total Enhancement Project) Wiki Guide by The STEP Team 79=Overhauls=11 A good indication of STEP's reliability is the Nexus ModID Number for STEP this is 11 which means it was the only 11th Skyrim Mod ever uploaded to the Nexus and we're now at over 54,000 There's more than 100,000 mods wordwide, that's a lot of guides needed just for individually installing, totally impossible when combining many together which is why only STEP survives it is a communal effort. For good textures choices you can try which is being updated regular Skyrim Mod Combiner by Drigger and Page Construction by iBeas7n 39=Utilities=51467 you need to download all the mods it combines. But whatever you do you must use a mod manager, my view is Mod Organizer is the only choice, it's also what the STEP Guide recommends. But it doesn't matter whether you want to use a guide or not, modding requires effort from you, it's not simple, it's not complicated but you still need to learn the basics, the does and especially the dont's. Gophers Basic Modding guide is good, his manager choice is not, do not use NMM, never think of using Steam Workshop that's not even a Mod Manager, it's just an aggresive downloader, Wrye Bash is technical but good, Mod Organizer can use it's unique features to add that advantage to it's own though. Basically, you will get nothing handed to you on a plate, if that's not good enough for you then never try modding Skyrim. In the end with all possible help available at hand, you must still mod your own game and must learn how to do so.
pornphile Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 You would like someone to make an installation video about mods? I found several on Youtube just now. Or are you looking for installation videos on specific mods? I'm not really sure what you're asking. You don't need any modding experience to just install mods. You just need to know how to computer. If you want to install more complex mods like SL, you can ask people here. Even if someone made a video, no two configurations are the same and you will have to put in effort to troubleshoot. Which means reading notes and lots of trial & error.
Cremationist Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 Well, I am literally just walking into the modding community as it is, and I thank you all for your contributions to this thread already. While I understand the difficulty of keeping it up to date now, thanks to you guys. I will see what I can learn from what has been posted in this thread.
germanicus Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Cremat. - wish you best is learning modding. It is always good to have more smart people who does a great job.
gvman3670 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Considering there could easily be hundreds-of-thousands of mods just for Skyrim alone releasing a modding guide or video is basically pointless. Even a few hundred available mods would mean there would be countless millions of possible combinations of mods. I do understand where your coming from though, i think you are a visual learner just like me. Sometimes just seeing something can save hours of typed explanations. Yet, therein lies a problem. Some mods are very small and realistically shouldn't need expanded installation instructions. In many cases it would take more time to make a video of how to install the mod than it took to make the mod in the first place. When one considers the time and money it takes to edit and render a video (and assuming you have the prerequisite hardware\software to begin with) it could very well mean the cost of making a video for mod installation could price some mod makers out of the hobby, afterall, they aren't paid for the work they do. In the end the best course of action to follow is to simply ask questions in modding forums. We have the benefit of people whom have come before us and have figured out the best way to do things and they are usually willing to help. Like anything else in life it takes time to get good at it but once you press past the learning curve you'll find it's a simple process. Just follow the mod-authors installation instructions, ask if you don't know, and give yourself time to learn. Also, welcome to the Lovers Lab community and here's some links to youtube videos covering some of Skyrim's modding basics. And, yes, i do see the irony in saying not everyone can make Skyrim mod videos then posting links to Skyrim modding videos. Core is right on. And watch these videos he posted. The info in Gopher's beginner tutorials will help a LOT. I watched them myself when I first started playing Skyrim on PC. Partly as a refresher and also to see if Skyrim modding was different than older Bethesda games (and it's really not that different ). Those vids will show you how easy it is to manually install mods, how to NMM (not the best choice, but it is easy for a beginner to use), and how to use Mod Organizer (a better alternative than Nexus Mod Manager, but it does come with a slight learning curve). Sometimes the best way to learn something is to jump right in. And, to be totally honest, you picked the very best Skyrim modding community to ask for help from. The people here are the best. Very friendly and helpful. They've been a godsend for me. So much so that I can now retexture/recolor things, modify stuff in Nifskope and have even started 3D modelling. There's a lot to learn on this forum. And if you ask for help you'll get it.
