Transparent/Semi-transparent textures?

Im curious what are the steps to create semi-transparent texture of clothing? Is it easy as selecting the texture part in photoshop and setting the opacity to a certain value? Or there are other steps?

Yea, you can easily set the oppacity to a lower value, thats how I've done and it worked. Maybe there are other and better ways, but thats the only i personally know

You can use gimp with .dds plugin you place the texture file into it to load it up you will also want to have the outfit/armor loaded up and rendered in nifskope so that you can see how it looks. First thing you will want to do is right click the armor/outfit piece that you want to add transparency and go to block and select remove this will delete that out of the nif this is great for finding what is under the armor or more importantly what isn't under it as long as you just hit load again and do not save what you did will not affect the nif. If there is no body or parts of it missing you will not want to make it transparent or you will see a holey body or missing body and that will require porting a body into it if you still want to make it transparent.

 

If there is a body under it you lasso the area that you want to make transparent/remove once you have it connected go to eraser and double click it change Opacity to anything *but* 100% at 100% you will end up erasing everything so set it at 5 and try it. Once erased once go to file and go to overwrite .dds file this will change the .dds file and at the same time make what you just did appear in nifskope if nothing changes right click the armor/outfit piece and go to node and select add property then look for NiAlphaProperty and click it now it should change in game.

 

Never close gimp till you are satisfied with the outcome once you close it you can't undo it and you will have to start over. If you look at it in nifskope and you don't like how it looks go to edit and go to undo this will undo what you did there is also one below it for undoing more at one time instead of clicking undo over and over once you undo it you can go back to file and overwrite the .dds file again and it will change back. Repeat till you like it and once you are done with the first nif and have saved it you will have to do the same thing to the 2nd nif as well as most skyrim mods have 2 nifs for each thing and what you do to one needs to be done to the 2nd one as well or it will not show up in game. So all you would have to do is right click it and add a NiAlphaProperty to it.
