New to 'Adult' Skyrim/How to Create Two Seperate Skyrim Installs?

Hello everyone,

So as the title says I'm new to 'adult' Skyrim, and I wanted to make an entirely serpate Skyrim install dedicated to just Adult-rated content. I use NMM for almost all of my mods, so I'm unsure how to procede with two copies. I'm going to be making a clean install anyway with my orignial Skyrim folder, as I screwed up an ENB.

Additionally, I was wondering if you have any personal recommendations for Adult Skyrim. Any and all are welcome!

Thanks again.

I'd recommend using Mod Organizer in place of NMM.

It takes some getting used to but the end result lets you make as many different "game sets" as you wish with different installed mods.

Thanks for the recommendation Dryuya. I watched a tutorial on MO just now and it doesn't seem too difficult. So the "Profiles" acts as "game sets"? How would that work for mods such as SKSE and Sky UI? Would I have to download it twice for both profiles?

If you just copy everything in skyrim folder it should work.

Or download yourself pirated version - its hardly a piracy when you own a legal copy.

Whatever you do save files are stored in documents/my games so both copies are going to use the very same save game folder.

MO stores the mod files separately and builds a virtual Data directory based on the mods you want to actually have active. This has a bonus that files are never actually overwritten so removing a mod is as clean as can be. (There is still the issue of mods leaving traces in the save files.) Since it is just the Data directory that is being managed, any mods that go in the base directory (SKSE, BOSS, EBN) still need to be installed by hand and aren't directly managed by MO.

Profiles are basically a mapping of the "installed" mods to what will actually show up in the virtual Data directory. Where before you would download the mod, and then install it by clicking on it in NMM, you now have 3 steps. Download, install (which will run any installer scripts just like in NMM), and then activate. Only the activated mods will show up in your skyrim game, and each profile can have its own list of activated mods. Also each profile can be set to have its own private set of saved games, which will help keep you from loading your adult savegame with the non-adult profile or vice versa. No need for multiple installs of everything.

Hmm so the way I'm understanding it, I can set up a profile named "Regular" and another named "adult" or whatever, and they can have their own unique set of mods?

Yup, you can have different mods running in each profile, besides SKSE and ENBs since they go outside the Skyrim/data folder and in the root directory.

For example, you could load 1020 different mods into MO then have 4 profiles each running 255 mods different than the other 3 profiles.

But there are plenty of other good reasons to use MO, too. Keeping a clean vanilla install preventing the need of reinstalling again. Easier management of what overwrites what (over "reads" is a more accurate descroption). LO issues are pointed out and suggestiong to fix are often offered, too. You can see what mods are required for each game save. Conflicts are listed and show which mod is winning the conflict at a glance. And several other good reasons, but I'm tired of typing!

What I did was; Install skyrim then renamed it to "Skyrim Vanilla" and then installed Skyrim again. It's a bit tricky when installing mods and activating them from the launch menu but NMM takes care of that for you. It does take up a lot of space but it works.

The first time I did it was for oblivion cause I had a friend play it and a zombie with a raging erection rushed at him in the beginning. As you would assume, it was super awkward for me. He was laughing hysterically at it but still.

I renamed the folder located in "program files/Bethesda Softworks/Skyrim" to "program files/ Bethesda Softworks/Skyrim Vanilla'

How about Skyrim Redone (Skyre)? The Reproccer and such expects the esps to be in the data folder, or is Skyre not compatible with MO? Also, how do I change my load order? I'm unable to change the order of the plugins, and when I attempt to let BOSS run, I get an error saying it cannot access the masterlist from online.

BOSS is being a jerk like that lately. Not sure what the issue is with it.

In MO there are two panes, the left shows installed mods (activated and inactive both) and the right shows plugins from activated mods in the left pane. To change plugin LO just drag and drop them where you want them in the list. The left pane you drag and drop them, too, so you can control what mod overwrites what other mod(s).

I've never used SkyRe so I can't comment specifically on that, but I've used SkyKids the armor reproccer patcher for that worked fine inside of MO. Go to the Skyrim Non Adult subforum and check the MO thread there. You'll probably find an answer in there. If not ask the question there and it should get answered.

Everything is compatible with MO

Say there's a program/executable that needs to be run to supplement a mod, like FNIS or Reproccer. All can be run and set up as launch able programs within MO. Find its location in the MO virtual data folder and right click> add as executable. By launching from MO the program finds and references your virtual MO data folder loaded up at that moment and will run against all the mods as intended.

Boss and Wrye Bash will also work the same way

It's also the biggest fault with MO...how all these programs/ini edits/edits to individual mods must be done differently in the MO environment. pretty much it all has to be self taught as a lot of people don't use it and there's not good tutorials for it online.

That's well and good. But as you should know there's all sorts of details involved in mod use and/or the fixing of mod errors that can require sometimes elaborate workarounds and google searches to help that the guid doesn't specififcally cover BECAUSE it's specific. More often then not these sort of searches point you to fixes specific to typical mod use...meaning users are working with the real skyrim data folder.

Again...yes all things I've run into can still be done somehow even within the MO system but no it hasn't always been easy. And I run about three different games with each close to the mod limit.

An example if you need one...I had a power outage recently and somehow it resulted in a Sexlab file becoming corrupted and not  allowing me to load SKSE. I struggled for awhile just finding out what was causing the issue and even when I finally did figure it out the online instructions only applied to normal installs...which I had to determine from myself the MO equivalent action to be taken. This happens often...meaning I simply spend more time fixing issue within MO environment than I would. Not a HUGE deal for me at all...but for other users who may not go as in depth with modding and mod troubleshooting it could become problematic and tiresome for them.

Hey sorry for the late reply.

Yeah with SKSE I was able to load the executable from MO. Should I have done that for the reproccer? For the reproccer itself, I copied and pasted it manually into the actual Skyrim Data folder.

I've tried moving around the plugins, but when I try to it just highlights the plugin and the rest of the plugins when attempting to drag the first plugin.

I'll make another thread in the non-adult section and see if I can find a solution there. I need a step by step process on how to install Skyre. Every other mod seems to work fine though, which is good.

Yeah the Reproccer (or BOSS, or FNIS or any external executable) shouldn't be placed in the vanilla data folder. The only data folder that matters anymore if using MO is the virtual one within MO itself. Reproccer in the vanilla data folder will try to find files in the vanilla folder...which if MO is being used it will find none and likely cause unexpected complications.

You can see the MO data folder in the tab called "Data". If you install Reproccer with MO you'll find its .jar executable in there as well. Right click it and choose to add it as an executable and you'll have your "MO based" Reproccer in the list along with your SKSE, vanilla launcher, BOSS, etc
