Skyrim Modding

So about two years ago I had started to mod bethesda games. I did a few things with fallout like new cells and lands but when skyrim came out I wanted to create custom content. I had started to do it but a lot of things got in the way and I had to stop doing it. Well now I have all the free time I could possibly get and I want to take advantage of it. My question is to you, what meshing program should I use? I'm most familiar with blender, but I also have Maya and Milkshape, not sure if I can use those for skyrim. Anyway I'm not sure which would be better to use but any help would be greatly appreciated!

Blender or 3DSmax.

I don't think there exists any working plugins that would let Milkshape and Maya work with Skyrim, atleast, i've not heard of any or any Skyrim modders who use those apps in their work, but they do exist for Blender and 3DSmax.

Blender is the free option, but also the more annoying one. You do have to jump through some fiery hoops to get things exported and imported in working order, it's not as easy with Skyrim as it was with the Fallout games.

3DSmax is said to be a lot easier to deal with in this regard, as in, the plugins apparently work a whole lot smoother. But on the flipside, getting a legal copy of that thing costs about as much a small family car :P

What version of 3ds max should I get, I am able to get a 3 year license for it.

Use whatever tool your most comfortable with.

I know people who use zBrush -> Maya -> 3dsMax workflow.

I know people who use just Blender or 3dsMax.

I personally use 3dsMax & Mudbox and some other assorted tools.

Point being, it doesn't matter what tools you use, their is almost always a way to transfer meshes from 1 format to another. Also Blender and 3dsMax support a lot of other 3d object formats so you can just import them from Maya or Milkshape.

But for ease of use to make .nif files, it's best to use Blender or 3dsMax to export, but it's also entirely possible to use nifskope.

edit: As for what version of 3dsMax you should get, it depends on what your doing, but for the most part I use 2014, there are nif plugins that work for *almost* everything in 2013/2014 versions Max. 2015 isn't supported yet, but with in built Python support, hopefully that will be fixed soon :D

Do I need to download python separately? I know you have to with Blender.

for 3dsMAx 2015?

I have no idea... (don't have my copy yet)

But yea don't get that version if you want to export to .nif, it'll be unsupported for awhile.

2014 doesn't use python :)

Well not directly at least, so no you don't need to download it to just install.

Okay, awesome. Are there any plugins, or anything really I should be aware of when using 3ds max?
