D_ManXX2 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 After much trial i was always surprised why my harddrive was not performing the way it should. And saw a description about switching IDE to AHCI to make the harddrive run faster. And remarkably it worked rather well. It seem when i first installed windows 7 i set it to IDE instead of what suppose to be. But a quick and easy fix seem to have solved this for me. Normally you need to make full reinstall but this quick edit from regedit will make it work just as well without format: It's actually not that hard to get the OS switched from IDE to AHCI, but the OP needs to get his BIOS set back to IDE first so that he can get Windows booted up. Once he's there, this is what needs to be done (this works for Vista and Windows 7):1) Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)2) Navigate to Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci3) Set the "Start" value to 0 (zero)4) Shut down5) Start up again, but before Windows boots go into the BIOS configuration screens and change the disk mode to "AHCI". Save the new BIOS configuration and restart so that Windows boots.When Windows starts, it will detect the change, load new disk drivers, and do one more reboot to start up with them.AHCI to IDE1) Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)2) Navigate to Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci3) Set the "Start" value to 3 (three)4) Shut down5) Start up again, but before Windows boots go into the BIOS configuration screens and change the disk mode to "AHCI". Guest carywinton Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Usually the particular settings referred to here are made in the system BIOS or CMOS settings, this is where the proper controller settings are made for what the motherboard supports. The newer drives (SATA) will support UEFI bios which will also be supported by the newer Video Cards, this is a huge improvement in terms of performance and control.

D_ManXX2 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Indeed. i always felt my hard drive was the major culprit for stutter till i fixed this part away from IDE. Even windows 7 says my hardrive performs 5.5 while other part are all over 7.0 to 7.9

Mashi Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 OCZ a few years ago were kicking up 4TB models, though they weren't quite on their knees at that point. They were connected by PCIe(not to be confused with PCIE) instead of SATA, we were considering using them at work for one of the simulation machines. In the end OCZ went into restructuring and got nabbed by Toshiba, so now they're a satellite much like Crucial/Micron. Anyway, 2TB is on the roadmap in the next 6mo from ADATA, Intel, and Samsung. Depending on chip stability and pricing which is what really is holding back the development of huge drives, you could see 4TB by next year.
