Mud Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 So my current Skyrim file is a horrifying behemoth of mods, groaning under its own weight as it struggles to support just under the maximum amount of mods I can possibly load at once, to the point I'm genuinely surprised it manages to work without my computer exploding upon starting a game. But work it does, and relatively well even with 100% less computer-exploding than expected, especially after the memory patch got rid of all those pesky freezes, except for one oddity. After my initial visit to the College of Winterhold went off without any problems, I find myself unable to access its exterior anymore. I don't know if it's something with the College itself or just something nearby, but if I load the exterior area then try to leave on foot or by fast travel, or try to save, my game crashes. I can enter the buildings fine, but if I use the pcb console command, I crash, as if something goes wrong when the game tries to unload the area. Approaching the outskirts of Winterhold, I am fine, but after entering the town, presumably far enough to load the College exterior, the problem starts happening. My Papyrus log is a terrible deluge of errant messages, so it's utterly useless to me, though it hasn't ever really helped me in the past. This is generally where you get a hint as to what the problem is. Are you getting something there related to the College? Perhaps you added something to the College and removed it some time ago?

And as of my current file I try not to remove anything in the middle of the playthrough because of all the bugs that can be caused by orphaned scripts, despite my wishes to trim this giant beast of a save game. At any rate, nothing has been done relating to the College between my first and subsequent visits. I did remove Expanded Winterhold Destruction Ruins after the crashing had already begun, thinking they might have been related, but that did not solve the problem. The only things I can think of that are out of place are that Birna and Ranmir are stuck outside their shop in Winterhold despite the USKP supposedly solving that bug, but it doesn't seem to be related - I can get close enough to render them in my game without getting close enough to trigger the crash bug.

I'd try letting the cells all reset. Either get a save-game cleaner. Or wait in an interior cell for 31 days ingame. That might solve the problem.

I said its outputs have been useless to me in the past, as almost every one of my crashes in the past have had the log end with scripts that were not related to my crashes at all. And in this situation, it still applies. When I say "other miscellaneous things", I meant random messages that are typically firing intermittent messages no matter where I am, and do not always appear in a crash log, like an Estrus Mimic script, or the Live Another Life version tracking script, and so forth.

In a new game, it seems as though the trigger for this crashing was not letting Faralda activate those magical fonts on the bridge when she first lets you into the College, opting to simply sprint past her to start the College quests. Upon starting Tolfdir's lesson (I also skipped Mirabelle's tour on this new save), I was no longer able to access the College exterior without crashing. But upon loading a save just prior to talking to Faralda and waiting for her to do her thing, I've started Under Saarthal and am still able to save after going into the exterior cell.
Mud Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Damn it, after leaving the area to visit Septimus Signus, I return to find the place crashing again. What the hell is going on here? I was even able to leave the College and create a save at the inn before, but now continuing that save and exiting the inn then trying to save causes a crash. Going to have to try deactivating huge chunks of my mods until I can single out the culprit, at this rate.
Mud Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Nope. Every time I find a possible cause, it turns out it wasn't that at all. Operating on the previous hypothesis that the college questline was somehow breaking the area, I've avoided the college quests entirely this file, visiting Winterhold one time early on to pick up the other quests in the area. I also removed the quest mod Agent of Righteous Might, which added a building to the area, before starting up this file. I've returned to give Nelacar Azura's Star many levels later, and this same old problem is still here. And I wasn't able to identify the offender by deactivating mods, either, so I must've let something slip through the cracks. The only thing remaining constant is that my first visit to the area is always fine and something goes haywire on subsequent trips, possibly only after I've quit out of the game, and I've never encountered any sort of crash exhibiting that pattern of behavior before. Makes it really hard to test too, because I can't just make a new file and see if it crashes if it doesn't happen until some time after the first visit.
Spyder Arachnid Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Trust me, I know your pain. The exterior of Winterhold and the College is nothing but crash time for me as well. I had to use the console to advance stages in the quests there and use the coc command to teleport to the different wings of the College just to do the other quests. It was such a pain. And yeah, it was fine at first just like you said, but then all the sudden randomly it started crashing for no reason. Wasn't until the Eye of Magnus showed up that it started for me. But even after I finally finished the quest and the Eye was gone, it still crashed. Finally finished it all though, and have been avoiding that place like the plague. If I get any other quests that have me go to the College or Winterhold, I just use the console to teleport me inside the buildings I need to be, cause I'll crash if I step foot outside there. And it's a complete mystery to me. Thought it had to deal with Expanded Winterhold Destruction Ruins and Expanded Towns and Cities, but that wasn't the case. Removed them, still crashed. Put them back, still crashed. Nothing fixed it. Seriously baffled as to why it happens. And yeah, like you said, the papyrus log tells you nothing. There is no errors whatsoever or problems listed in the log at the time of the crash or even before it.

Yeah was just checking yours against mine, and noticed you don't even use Expanded Towns and Cities or Expanded Winterhold Destruction Ruins. So that squashes my idea of thinking those were causing the problem lol. Weird though. The two mods that I have that actually affect Winterhold, are not the ones causing the problem. Cause if you aren't using them, and I am using them, but we both have the same problem, then they can't be what is causing it.

Mud Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 What I do is disable half my mods, then half of the remaining ones, then half of those, and so forth. I leave a few intact so I don't crash from weirdness, but it usually works... but it didn't work this time. Either I need to disable even more... or perhaps it's not even caused by any one mod? I had Expanded Winterhold Destruction on the first save this crash started happening on, but got rid of it when I saw how unfinished it was. And the crash stuck around even on new saves, so yeah, it can't be that. Just now though, something strange. I coced into the Winterhold inn to get the Black Star, then thought I'd take a poke around. Turned off collision, equipped the mod-added boots I got that increase movement speed by 200, and flew around the vicinity of the college, checking under it, around it... saw nothing out of the ordinary, so I turned collision back on and settled back down in the town. Saved my game to see if, just maybe, I wouldn't crash... And I didn't. Wat. Could it be something to do with the nearby cells? Are they not loading properly or something?
