What's the difference between making changes in game vs in the creation kit ? [question]

What's going on when you change something in the game? For example, if you steal the a merchant's cloth in windlem. Save and reload, the merchant will still miss their cloth. What happens if you put some cloth on that npc merchant in the creation kit and load that mod.

So which takes precedence? How does it work?

in game you have tracking and can not             you can not steal the clothes of npc that is wearing it     you will have to kill the npc to do so      or make a mode in ck that make you able to steal the clothes with a script that unequipe the npc when you do it.

when you steal anything from npc (pickpocket) you can be tracked by gardians and get in prison saving, quiting and reloading the same save will not change the tracking  and the facts the consequences

if you add more clothes to npc in game the npc has a script that will choose to wear the most expensive or the most protecting wear depands the situations and priorities.

That's not what I meant. I think I wasn't being clear. I was wondering what happens when you make an edit in the creation kit that is conflicting with what's in your saved file. For example, in my existing saved game, there is a lydia. Let's say in the creation kit, I give her an iron sword. What happens to the Lydia in my saved game? Does she get an Iron sword?

What are the things that the game track in your saved file. In other words, what can't you edit using the creation kit because it's saved by the game?

I think that when you make changes with the CK they happen right from the start when you enter in the game world. It's permanent and you can only change it by editing again in the CK.

Whereas making changes ingame let you make your choice, though it obviously require some work to make it work well ( mods that let you change spouse clothes through dialogue).

About your example of the clothe, I think by making a .esp file which gives the merchant a new robe will give him that item, even if he was naked before. Because it will count as something new, the other way around won't work though.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but after 1K hours of Skyrim I think that's how it works

If you take part of someones base outfit from them when they reset (usually a few days) they will have a new one again. If you steal everything from them they will reset faster. You can steal items from their outfit list but you need a very high pickpocket skill to do so (I think it is 100). The outfit resetting is the reason why it is so difficult to keep an npc wearing a custom outfit.

ah interesting, so they reset to a default outfit, and that outfit is the one assigned in the creation kit.
