Do you need Schlongs of Skyrim these days?

I've played on and off for years, but I usually would play LE and thought I'd give SE a go.

In general less and less I see Schlongs of Skyrim as a required file, but it was always just something that seemed to be obviously needed, so I go to install and play as normal, but I get the startup error everyone seems to be getting "SchlongsOfSkyrim.dll file not found, reinstall SOS" basically this:

Which according to the replies as well as the SOS "common issues" page is due to SKSE needing to be downgraded, but downgrading something as important as SKSE especially when so many mods rely on it seems like a bad decision. So I wanted to know if SOS is still needed basically, and if not, what do people use now?

Thanks for you advice and help.

I doubt that's even an option.

TNG apparently, but all animations are made for SOS. As long as TNG has the same dimensions it should be fine, but I personally see no reason to switch away from SOS.

The important missing bit after "everyone" is "who installed the wrong version of SOS":

"...I get the startup error everyone who installed the wrong version of SOS seems to be getting..."

I think it was back when we either went from 1.5.97.* to 1.6.* or from 1.6.3* or thereabouts to a newer version like 1.6.640.0 that SOS was a bit slow to update, it was looking for a new maintainer and such, that it got forked into a couple of different projects. There was the dll-less version which I imagine still works but probably has some performance issues. The other forks for the most part ended up in random forum posts. I imagine it's more organized these days, this was a couple of years ago after all.

Figure out what game version you have, and do a Google search for that specific version something like this:

"Schlongs of Skyrim 1.6.1170.0 site:loverslab.com"

Edit: Or you can wait for one of our other forum members who really like to grill people that install the wrong SOS version; they usually post a direct link. 👍

SOS has still biggest selection of plugins/addons, all kinds of them - including regular ones, futa compatible and strapons. TNG cannot compete in that department, and on it's own it's not bugs-free, to say the least.

I'll take the correction on the version of SOS, it's funny I did indeed try searching for a newer version, but I just couldn't find it. It's a very Todd Howard thing to have a seemingly unrelated Skyrim update break SOS specifically lol, I won't pretend to know how that works though. I did luckily already check my Skyrim version which makes things a bit easier.

Thanks for your reply and advice.

So it's still used then, thank you, that makes more sense. I know sometimes mods get combined, so I figured the reason it wasn't showing up in requirements is it was implemented into SL or something.

You can safely assume that if a mod contains a dll it's absolutely doing something it shouldn't be doing. This is in the context of how compatible it will be with any given game version. If you want to minimize the damage (as in downtime from Skyrim), then stick to the ones that come with the source code - even better if the source code is released with every binary release.

If we take an example close to us here on LL, has anyone ever seen the source code for SexLabUtil.dll? When the maintainer of that is done, moved on to Roblox or something, and Microslop re-releases Skyrim for the 21st time, we're f***ed.

Makes me appreciate how lucky we are there's such an active community to make all these brilliant mods work at all, modders have always saved Bethesda games for me honestly, not just for lewd playthroughs. Although I think ES6 will have the best anti penis mod architecture yet, and it won't be on purpose lol.

There's no reason for ES6 to not roll with Denuvo DRM like everyone else, and that alone is going to be enough to completely block dll-based mods: no fancy shaders, no bouncy tits.

ES6 will flop though so that probably won't even cross peoples minds when we get to it. Starfield died on the spot when modders said "it's not worth fixing"; made headlines in every village, it was definitely one of the funny moments of 2023.

Don't be so pessimistic - Almost Intelligence when properly motivated, already can reverse engineer (any/some/most) apps you feed it with. In (short) time it will be even more effective. So even in worst case scenario described - there is a cheap solution on not so far horizon.
