mclericp Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 TItle says I have this urge of wanting to play modded skyrim again. However i m put off by the number of CTDs i get when playing the game. My previous game crashes were random(it can happen once every 1min, or once every 30min, or never). I mostly crash: -outdoors when looking around -between loading doors, -open inventory and -bartering So what can i do to minimalise the CTDs? 1. Should i use modorganiser and safetyload? 2. What sort of mods should i avoid? I want to play the civil war overhaul. 3. Does having huge texture mods like skyrim 2k, SFO and WATER crash the game to desktop with a higher rate? I would appreciate genuine replies because this is what it is preventing me from trying to enjoy skyrim. *fyi i will be nuking everything and reinstall every mod from scratch, so basically i select mods. I also use projectENB. I aim to have as little scripted mods as possible. **load order coming tmr**
Thulas Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Your loadorder would come in handy here to help you with your problem. And yes, you definitely should use safetyload. If you have many high resolution textures it can increase the amount of freezes, but not CTDs as far as I know.
Guest Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 And be careful with certain Sexlab mods. Defeat for example blew up my game everytime I tried to save, change cells or try to do shit in my inventory while my follower was humping a bandit. Probably wasn't caused by Sexlab Defeat alone but I couldn't be arsed to check.
mclericp Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 ok i shall post a load order tomorrow
Someone92 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 So what can i do to minimalise the CTDs? 1. Should i use modorganiser and safetyload? 2. What sort of mods should i avoid? Mod Organizer has some very neat feature which are especially useful if you want to play with more than one character (as the may require different mods). If you just want to play with one character most features Mod Organizer has over Wrye Bash may not be that important to you. Savetyload is rumored to cause instability; iirc just yesterday Boris released a new tool which makes Savetyload obsolent (don't have a link at hand right now). 3.) If Skyrim occupies more than 3-4 GB RAM it crashes; graphic mods like HD textures can quickly rise the amount of RAM Skyrim occupies; afaik ENB can swap those textures to your graphic cards RAM, so if you have a 2+ GB graphic card you should be fine even with a lot of HD mods.
crusher Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 ModOrganizer, Boss, Safety Load, Enb Memory Fix [included with any ENB] and S.T.E.P (modified to liking) First add all the mods you want Then enable papyrus logging and goggle at all the errors (add desktop shortcut to this log folder, get NotePad ++) Next do some quick research on what a Scripted mod is Disable any mod you suspect that is heavily scripted Play game where crashes typically happen, over and over to test, the payrus log will show you the script errors, use MO Data tree to find the offenders You should shoot for about 230 .esp with a papyrus log of about 7 to 10 kb per 5-10 mins of gameplay (about 1-3 kb every 5 mins of gameplay) I never crash anymore with this method. (leave room for about 20 script-heavy mods. I have 400 mods install about 230 default .esp) Good chance heavily scripted mods that do not show errors are probably 'well scripted', ignore verbose logging common in SL mods, but mind their errors. Add this line: ClearInvalidRegistrations=1 : to your SKSE.ini. No SKSE.ini, then create one. personal playstyle: Once you have an extremely stable heavily moded skyrim -- no crashes Duplicate your MO Profile and add back all the 'HeavyScript Mods' a few at a time, test which are able to run on your rig, which cause problems. Do a 'maintenance save' with your CleanMod MO Profile by logging into last clean save and getting to locations/checkpoints you may have acquired using 'scripty' mod profile. Save games using console \save "Clean Mods Checkpoint Here"\ use quotes if spaces in save-name, or use Local Save feature of MO. This way you'll have a stable save to fall back on if something bugs out, or if you want to mix up new mods, delete old and create a new HeavyScript MO Profile without orphaned scripts. You could even do this with a Vanilla MO profile, but re-ordering MCM is a pain. Could take about a week or so of research and testing to find what works for you, once working just simple maintenance.
gvman3670 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I'd add that using TES5Edit to clean the .esm files for Update, Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn are basically a MUST DO. IIRC there are about 900 bad instances in those alone that can cause some issues once you start modding so I'll never start a new game without cleaning it before even adding any mods. When you run BOSS it shows you which contain dirty edits, and nearly all of those are from Bethesda. Using a lot of high res textures will definitely eat up a lot of memory, too, so try to avoid those. And little seemingly hamless things can use up a lot of memory, like retextured towns, adding more NPCs, using lighting effects mods and even using something like Lanterns of Skyrim.
