ZebraRundung246 Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 Hello, I'm getting this error message in the game > "Event" and it won't go away. The screen goes black! I have a save point at level 30, but when I save and try to play again, this message appears! What should I do? I have the latest version, but sometimes AE disappears and I have to download everything again!

I think the "event" message is the least of your problems. How about you figure out why your game keeps diappearing before we deleve into xEdit scripting to find the popup message? How did you determine Skyrim has disappeared?

It was crashing, and I went to Steam and launched Skyrim! And then the message "Thanks for bying" came up, and I had to redownload it!

You need to start your game via the SKSE launcher, starting from Steam cannot work. If you are using any mod manager (you should!) - there's a start button. Aaand it will most probably tell you if you've even downloaded all the requirements for all your installed mods. Problem seems to me, that you still have to read loads of readmes and installation instructions, maybe ask your mum again?

And who are you? Do you want to get personal or help? If I start Skyrim with Steam, I don't need SKSE or anything? I use MO2 and haven't had any error messages! Grumpy old man, seems to be right!

You need to run it through Steam once, because like with practically all games, Steam will install pre-requisites on the first launch. In the case of Skyrim, it will create registry entries and such (or at least it used to). If you run it through Steam, you won't have SKSE loaded. Also, if you run Skyrim through Steam at a later date you risk bricking your modded setup. Edit: Maybe should clarify that I don't recall ever checking if it's Steam or the Skyrim launcher that makes the registry values. It would make sense that it's the Steam Client Service, as the Skyrim launcher doesn't have UAC elevation and thus no access to HKLM. Another thing that points at SCS is that I had to add the registry values by hand, which makes sense in my environment where I've blocked Steam from making changes to my system. It's one user-friendliness benefit that Vortex has over MO2. If you ask me, SKSE is the only absolutely essential mod everyone looking to mod Skyrim must have. At some point down the line Papyrus Tweaks also becomes an essential mod. On 10/5/2025 at 5:18 PM, ZebraRundung246 said: Grumpy old man, seems to be right! Maybe CaptainJ03 could have been more diplomatic in their response, but unfortunately there's truth to it. The fast-track way to a modded Skyrim is to use Collections from the Nexus. But if you ask me, that just gives you an even larger black box, which will eventually lead to even bigger issues. I think, even if you were already decent at computers (like for instance, you had a bit of programming background), you'd still be looking at something like 1-2 years of effort to get a properly modded Skyrim. It depends a lot on how much you're willing to settle for what already exists. I like to make most things myself and at least customize the rest, so I've been at this for 14 years or so - still looking for my Perfect Skyrim™. It's not wasted time though, since I use Skyrim modding as an excuse to learn new skills and maintain the ones I already know. Edited October 7, 2025 by traison 2
traison Posted October 5, 2025 Posted October 5, 2025 When it comes to finding the source of that message box though, that might be a tricky one because the text is so generic: the word "event" is used a lot. Here's an xEdit script configured to look for MESG records with "event" in them: Spoiler { Find message } unit UserScript; function Initialize: integer; var i: integer; j: integer; f: IInterface; e: IInterface; sig: string; begin // iterate over loaded plugins for i := 0 to Pred(FileCount) do begin f := FileByIndex(i); for j := 0 to Pred(RecordCount(f)) do begin e := RecordByIndex(f, j); sig := Signature(e); if sig <> 'MESG' then Continue; Search(e) end; end; end; procedure Search(e: IInterface); var m: string; begin m := GetElementNativeValues(e, 'DESC'); if pos('event', m) > 0 then AddMessage(IntToHex(GetLoadOrderFormID(e), 8)); end; end. If that script doesn't find it, then you can use a tool I've made specifically for finding strings in Skyrim. It could be used to search for calls to MessageBox. Analyze the source code of the scripts it finds to identify the one that's creating that popup. My tool is available upon request, if you want it.
