I think my game just had a stroke

The game ran fine the past few weeks since I installed it. Everything ran as smooth as it should. However, yesterday I had the game randomly freeze on me, I closed the game and relaunched it but that was when the issue began. Now when I try to pause the game it takes upwards of 10 seconds for the menu to show up. Saving the game became an agonising experience. Has this ever happened to anyone? Everything runs smoothly except for pausing the game.
