My game automatically updated, and i can't rollback the game properly.

Hello loverslab, i come to you in a time of great need.

Somehow, steam decided to shadow update my skyrim se to the 1.6 1170 version yesterday. Despite applying the instructions from this reddit thread, my game still doesn't work. It passes from crashing at the game start to crashing on the main menu:

My modlist is massive, and pretty stable all things considered. There's a bunch of mods that i don't even remember where i got them and a bunch of stuff i don't want to loose, so i'd really really like if a loverlab wizard could find a solution to my problem. I've added the crashlogs if this can help.

Please. Pretty please.

Lookup how to download Steam Depots. You can still get 1.5.97 that way. it just takes some extra know-how.

Also, always make sure to keep a backup copy of the vanilla files somewhere in case you ever need to start over again.

You could try the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Downgrade Patcher over on the Nexus.
There is also one for Creation Kit Downgrade Patcher if such is also needed.

Good luck.

So i just managed to downgrade about 5 minutes ago. It's pretty unintuitive, as you first have to manualy downgrade to a version supported by this very downgrader before doing a full downgrade using the unofficial downgrader. I reapplied the engine fixes and some other utilities, and i can now load SOME saves, as a lot of things broke, like, for some reasons, highpolyheads.

Gotta start scratching my head to fix all this now i suppose.

For sure. Now that i know steam can just decide to, on a whim, mess up all my game, i gotta be extra carrefull.

That's kind of always been the case. The only exception is if you tell steam to not update until launched and launch the game directly with the .exe instead of through steam. Even then that's not 100%.

It's not a problem for pretty much any other game.

You can / should also set steam to offline mode... i'm on AE but still doing it anyway just in case they drop some update that could mess up my modlist ~

I'm back with some more problems. Somehow, i cannot load any of my previous saves. I managed to get my game working again on new games, but loading anything that existed prior to the rollback crashes the game, and i get a wierd HDT SMP report in my crashlogs.

   [10] 0x7FF95C535159                  hdtSMP64.dll+00B5159 hdt::UnkEngine::onFrame
        [C:\Games\Faster HDT-SMP\skse64_2_00_20\src\skse64\hdtSMP64\Hooks.cpp:250]
        movzx eax,byte ptr [rbx+16h]

I've applied the engine fixes again, modifier the toml file to allow the save size to be bigger, reinstalled HDT SMP just in case, but nothing seems to work.

I'm probably missing something super obvious right now, Anyone got an idea ?

Thanks !

You can set the appmanifest file for Skyrim to 'read only', and this will prevent Steam from updating Skyrim ever, even if you try manually click 'update' in Steam. As long as the appmanifest for Skyrim is set to read only, you should be fine.

For window 10, do the following. On windows 11 or different versions, the steps might be a tad different:

  1. Open Steam
  2. Go to 'Library'
  3. Right click on Skyrim SE, select properties, then installed files, and click 'browse'
  4. From where Skyrim SE is installed, go back 2 folders (you'll be in ...\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition, you want to get to just ...\steamapps)
  5. Look for a file called 'appmanifest_489830.acf', right click it, go to properties, and check 'read only'
  6. Hit apply, then ok, and now Steam will be unable to update Skyrim

Hope this helps! :)

This isn't the SE tech support forum.  This forum is for classic Skyrim/LE.  You're limiting yourself to a smaller pool of people experienced enough to assist you by posting this here instead of https://www.loverslab.com/forum/73-technical-support-skyrim-special-edition/.

His issue isn't exactly LE exclusive. Is it unrealistic to expect LE to get any more updates? Yes, but you're being a little pedantic here. The forum"s title doesn't say it's LE specific, so it's understandable to think this is just a general support forum instead of LE specific.

Whether or not you think this is a general tech support forum is irrelevant.  LE hasn't received an update in more than 12 years, so this issue isn't relevant to LE.  https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Patch  There is a tech support forum dedicated to the thread author's game version where their issue will be more likely to receive support.

The strange thing is, i'm fairly sure i did this a while back and steam still ended up somehow updating the game. I'll do it again just to be sure.
