Myst42 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Yeah they suck... I had to say it I'm fond of playing in an immersive way, mostly following my own moral principles getting involved into roleplay In that mood, I most of the time play "good" characters... you know, save the villagers, kill the bad guy, get the girl. If it comes to stealing or killing, I make sure it's for a good cause... someone must really deserve to die There's an exception to when I'm playing "evil" characters, like a necromancer, but even then I tend to limit the bloodshed to evil things, though there's a lot less of the dilemma when asked to kill for power or personal benefit The thing is I was checking the "Daedric Quests" in Skyrim and almos EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM involves a daedric prince asking you to kill you friends What the fuck is wrong with them, they're so fixated on this thing... it's like betrayal is the only thing that turns them on The only princes I like are Azura, Meridia and Sheogorath... yes he enjoys driving you mad, but aren't we all already mad anyways? He just shows you the truth, "The more ye fight it, the worse it will get for ye..." I got tired after a while of being asked to kill my friends and telling them to go to hell. It's always the same thing. Don't they have another thing to talk about? Fuck that Boethia Quest
EternalDamned Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I don't think the problem is so much that the Daedric quests are mostly evil...they are supposed to be! The problem is a serious lack of Aedric quests. You can do some minor quests for Mara and Dibella and that's it! Need some new quest mods for the Aedre side.
Thulas Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Wait, which Daedra except Boethia asks you to kill your friends? Isn't he the only one? I must say I am not fully aware of every quest, but still I remember only him who caused the death of someone who is closer than the normal NPC to you.
EternalDamned Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Mephala for the Whispering door quest is one. But I think he means more in just general terms of trying to play as the "Knight In Shining Armor" is tough in Skyrim since the vast majority of the Daedric quests want you to be a liar, thief and murderer, more anti-hero than hero.
Thulas Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Mephala for the Whispering door quest is one. But I think he means more in just general terms of trying to play as the "Knight In Shining Armor" is tough in Skyrim since the vast majority of the Daedric quests want you to be a liar, thief and murderer, more anti-hero than hero. Actually that only makes it far more believable to be the "good guy", because without a counterpart to the idea of beeing "good", it is needless to try it in the first place. Without a direct picture of "evil" being "good" is near to impossible. The reason for that is the same reason I wrote "good" and "evil" with quotations: What matters is both the point of view and the differentation to what is "good" and "evil" in the first place. In the eyes of the Daedra, they are not "evil" at all.
EternalDamned Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I see where you're coming from, and kind of agree. But trying to go with how he says he wants to play, which I have tried several times myself. I can understand his frustration. You can destroy the Dark Brotherhood, and there is a mod for destroying the thieves guild that is decent. But for several of them. The only way to be the "good guy" is to not do the quests. Like the Whispering door quest. There isn't an option to talk to Jarl Balgruuf and tell him Mephala is trying to corrupt his son, so all you can do to be the good guy is ignore the quest. Boethia, you can kill the cultsists, then ignore the rest of the quest. I think he'd be happier, if there was a tougher route to finish the quests in the "good guy" way...That's all.

Then though also the other direction would be needed; together with quests to be a blasphemical for the Daedra, there also need to be quests to be one for the Aedra. My personal oppinion on the Daedra is that they are not "evil", just have their own nature, and they grant power and artifacts to those who work in their ways. By neither accepting their gifts nor working for their will in the first place, you already are "good".
srayesmanll Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Specific to the Mephala quest: Doesn't the quest actually end when you get the sword, whether or not you use it? Since that's the case, you can make the case that by taking that sword out of the room, you are protecting others from Mephala's influence (the boy) by taking the sword yourself, then stashing somewhere where no one can get it. Thinking about it, the Molag Bal quest is can be thought of as (sort of) good in similar way as above. You are killing a priest of Boethiah (sp?) (another evil daedra). Yes it is on behalf of Molg Bal, but again by a killing the priest of an evil daedra and then taking the artifact of another evil daedra and hiding it away, you are protecting weak-minded people from being influenced by the daedra and using the weapon for evil. The Mehrunes Dagon quest can also be thought of the same way, preventing the mentally unbalanced future Dagon worshipper (forgot his name) from getting the Razor and hiding it away as well. In all cases, the PC must never use them, just hide them away from others. Too bad there is no quests to actually destroy these artifacts... Boethiah's quest is basically evil (killing a friend). Don't see a "good" resolution on that one except the hiding away of the armor, but you still kill "a friend" to do it.

Boethia = Kill your friend and Elisif Mephala = Claim the sword and see your 1st best friend and Lydia's Uncle being killed by his own children Molag Bal is Just Molag Bal, it gets worse when you see serana Herma Mora is Inevitable, and mainly because of the legend that all Dragonborn were tied to him in a certain way. Dagon you can simple ignore his pledge, he's useless now that he's banished from Tamriel forever Hircine, well werewolves are dangerous and double rewards are good as it is
DespairSyndrome Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Strange that this topic has come out again, I remember way back when Tytanis was still the most popular mod people have been asking for an alternate way to do daedric quests. A simple "hide quest" function in the journal would suffice. After all majority of the complaints are about the journal being permanently besmirched and the only out is to complete the quests.
Myst42 Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Wait, which Daedra except Boethia asks you to kill your friends? Isn't he the only one? I must say I am not fully aware of every quest, but still I remember only him who caused the death of someone who is closer than the normal NPC to you. There's Boethia who wants you to kill Lydia or whoever is currently your BFF. Quest NOT completed Dagon who wants you to kill the guy who told you where to get his dagger, he's he's a bit crazy, but still a nice guy Hircine who wants you to kill that nice werewolf dude who was in terrible pain because he didnt really enjoy being a werewolf like the companions do Clavicus Vile wants you to kill his dog... And I'm with fucking PETA in protecting animal rights!! (I even saved the Shellbugs in Dawnguard DLC cause they look so freaking cute) Thankfully the way of getting the item is to actually be good this time. That Mephala thing is probably one of the worst items ever... it wants you to kill al your friends... Fortunately the quest ends and you can ignore the stinking sword The last encounter I had was with Hermaeus Mora... totally "Lovecraftian" appearance... also wanted you to betray that mage who was investigating the Dwemer thingy and "take your rightful place as his champion"... On the game, I told him to go fuck himself cause I thought he was going to ask me to kill him too, also thankfully it has no consequenses on the quest as you still get the book but the death of that poor mage is inevitable Starting to see a pattern here? I'm still a bit confused with all the Aedra and Daedra thing... the Aedra are supposed to be the good guys right? But it says they have less power than the Daedra or something like it... no phisical form, no plane of their own... some other place it says some Daedra used to be Aedra and they are back as the rightful gods again... it's all a bit messy still to me

Some never got involved and some managed to draw back from creating Nirn. Malacath was originally an Aedroth named Trinimac and Miridia could've been one too. It's all really quite vague. It is also believed that Padomay (aka Sithis) who basically created the universe never wanted 3 separate planes. Mundus and Aetherius were supposed to belong to Oblivion.

shadowlord445 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Well, most of the Daedric Princes are kinda dickish to begin with. Found a nice lore vid.
Aethyri Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I just want to be perfectly clear here. THE DAEDRA ARE *NOT* YOUR FRIENDS. You mean *LESS* than nothing to them. You are at best, a diversion from the boredom of eternity. And at worst, you're meat for the grinder. You can be their greatest servant, any of them, and they will cast you down without a second thought if it serves them in some way, whether by benefit, entertainment, or if they just got bored with you. Your friends and allies mean even less. And how much fun is it for them to make you kill your buddies. The people you actually care about. You're their *servant*. You will do as they command or be cast out of their good will and favor. If you want divine friends who are going to look out for you, and welcome your friends without the need for murder you need to hook up with the Aedra, (Nine/Eight Divines) Akatosh especially. The dragon god of time is everybody's best friend and he will always invite you to parties. Also, I might add that not every daedric quest in skyrim involves killing your friends. Specifically - (Spoilers! Beware!) Azura doesn't have you kill any of your friends. She's down right pissed off at that guy corrupting her star though. She's also mad about the fork. Can't blame her though. Boethiah demands a sacrifice of a follower. Doesn't really matter who. Just go get somebody to follow you. Some poor schmuck that you pay to fight for you works. Pay them, then get your gold back. That's smart business. Clavicus Vile actually asks you to kill *his* best friend. Even if they think each other are insufferable. Choice is yours though, you don't even have to do it. I like the mutt. Good dog. Hermaeus Mora wants elf blood. And alot of it. Go forth and play many games of stabby stabby cut cut. Hircine wants his stray werewolf hunted down and killed. Don't have to do it if you don't want. Heard he got rabbies. Malacath is pissed at one of his orcs. Rotten fellow he is. Mehrunes is one of those psychos we mentioned earlier. The guy that helps him. That worships him. Yup, he's lost his value. Kill em. Those red robes were so out of style. Now Mephala is down right interesting. She gives you a great sword, no strings attached. BUT WAIT! Theres strings attached! Specifically, you don't have to kill *your* friends, but anybody that likes you and just happens to get impaled on the blade will make it stronger. But Mephala is weird like that. Threads of fate. The webspinner. Blah blah blah. Meridia hates the undead for some reason, but nobody knows why because her daedric sphere of influence is obscurity. Molag Bal just wants a little show. You, some frail old men, and ONE WHOPPING HEAD SMASHER OF A MALLET! That and he wants to break the priest of his faith to another Daedra. So really, it's just a fit of jealousy. Namira is hungry. And so you will be too. Isn't that guy looking good enough to eat? It's probably the cheese. Peryite spreads the plague. Or you do. He's too small and lazy. Sanguine want's you to drink. And why not! It's a party! Vaermina wants her artifact to be free once more. But you can choose not to. Of course, she gives the best dreams. Mmmmm, explosions. And then of course everybody's favorite... except Azura. She still hasn't gotten over the fork thing. SHEOGORATH! All he wants is to enjoy some vactation time. Inside the mind of a centuries dead mad man, who may or may not have been mad. He didn't seem quite that angry though. More bonkers than anything really. So really. Only *one* Daedric quest in Skyrim wants you to kill your buddies. And even then, doesn't strictly speaking have to be your buddies. Just people that like you. And if you're being a bad guy, why do you care about those people anyway?
Myst42 Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 That's a very goow way of explaining things Technically yes, there's only one quest asking you to kill "your" buddies. But a lot of the others ask you to kill people or creatures that have done no wrong to you and you may even like Also I think I understand now how the mythology works now. So the Aedra and Daedra were the same thing, but their name changed when a few guys decided to create the world, and were left very weakened by it Thing is I invented a story for roleplaying. read if you like story ideas.. In Oblivion, our champion becomes Sheogorath, who is split from Jyggalag, efectively becoming two princes. And as in my Skyrim playthrough I didnt want to give up my Oblivion character, so I recreated her. But I had to think of a story to explain why she wasnt in the Isles anymore, so I made up a story of how she grew bored and decided to experiment the world again as humans do. And so she descended to the mortal realm leaving her daedric aspects in the form of the old Sheogorath to rule the Isles. In the mortal plane she prepared a deception that would fool even herself as it took away her memories and would make the other daedra think she was actually human too, efectively fooling them. How amusing!. To explain the part of Sheogorath's quest, well... she's still the daedric prince of madness... by definition... she's mad. So Sheogorath is just a projection of another part of herself made of buried memories, one she made to finally end up giving herself her own artifact, the Wabbajack In that line of thought, she's a daedric prince who actually cares, like Azura, and prefers to side with the Aedra some times, though she has no problem in spreading lunacy as long as it's an amusing kind of madness for merry occasions and nice people and a totally destroying form of unhealthy insanity to her foes. That's probably also the reason why she's so eager to tell the other princes to go fuck themselves when they think they can command her as their puppet That could perfectly explain a continuity line I understand the viewing of mortals as a sort of amusement, but there are still differences. Some care, some do not and some just want to butcher Also why the hell would a person willingly want to follow a deity that only wants to see you dead? Being an Akatosh, Azura or Malacath follower makes sense. Being a Dagon follower... Duh! It's probably the worst idea ever. Why do these guys even have shrines? Who can be stupid enough to follow such shitty gods? So I'm adding Sanguine and Malacath to the list of nice folk cause they're not as harmful as all the others. Hangover and Samurai's code. Nice things

The Hero of Kvatch (PC of Oblivion) splits the Daedric Prince of Order from Maddness and becomes the new entity for Sheogorath. Sheo now runs around helping people in his/her/its fun and exciting method of insane therapy. Hence why we see them soothing the long dead Pelagius. Sheo is actually helping the spirit come to rest, even though it seems like it's just a party. Still a Prince of Maddness though, so highly unpredictable. Also, Aedra and Daedra only have those names because of the ancient mortal races. Aedra means "Our Ancestors" - Daedra means "Not Our Ancestors." So they likely identify themselves by those terms simply for the convenience of their mortal followers. It should also be noted that while the Aedra are very powerful, due to their hand in creation they are not immortal and can be killed, while it is believed that Daedra who hold lesser power in the mortal world can not be killed, but only banished back to their planes of oblivion where after a time they will reform. Obviously this comes at a bit of a trade, that while the Aedra are immensely powerful and mortal, they have a limited ability to act in mortal affairs. While the Daedra not being able to maintain themselves in the mortal world, have autonomy and can act and interfere with mortals. And don't be so quick to embrace Malacath as a good guy. He's pretty neutral like most of the rest, but shows a great deal of favoritism to his "children" and followers. Many Orcs revere him as the progenitor of their species, but not all. He is also shown to keep ownership of trolls and ogres. He is also *VERY* unforgiving, and keeps grudges long after those who have wronged him are dead and gone. So if you're a follower of Malacath, worship him, and pledge yourself to his beliefs, you are quite likely to earn his favor. If not, then you are any other mortal and not worthy of his time. But if you kill a follower of his, rob one of their honor, take their credit in great deeds, break sworn oaths, or tick him off in any way shape or form, you'll have a long lasting grudge from a Daedric prince. So he's certainly not one of the worst Daedra, just not a great one either. ****Also why the hell would a person willingly want to follow a deity that only wants to see you dead?**** Being an Akatosh, Azura or Malacath follower makes sense. Being a Dagon follower... Duh! It's probably the worst idea ever. Why do these guys even have shrines? ****Who can be stupid enough to follow such shitty gods?**** First set of asterisks: because just like in reality mortals are (mostly) power hungry twits that are easily led around by the nose with promises of power/wealth/prestige/etc. Second set of asterisks: weak minded or desperate sods who don't have the pc's ability to gain massive amounts of wealth by robbing graves while they hunt through ancient zombie infested crypts looking for words to dragon spells Sammy explains things quite well. In addition to that, people are known to worship evil deities in an attempt to appease them so they won't kill everybody. It can be just as much fear as it is respect, so it depends on the person in particular.
MissyB Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Not all Daedra are dicks, some are slightly less dickish than others. Take Azura for example. She acts as a rightful and duty oriented guardian to the dunmer people. She basically protected them by reincarnating the Nerraverine, to stop the false tribunal from mucking up everyone's priorities. Also Meridia is kind of good as well. Granted she sounds like an obnoxious self-righteous prick whenever she says something, her goals are just. She hates necromancers, and the undead, because she sees it as a bastardization of nature. She even has you put some of her followers out of misery, when they become reincarnated by a necromancer. Also at first i was quick to say screw the Daedra they suck. Then in this mod i downloaded there was this khajiit monk called Qua'dojo. He went on to say how he worshiped both Aedra & Daedra for they both play a part in maintaining order. At first i'm like shuttup because that's just dumb, but then he says "Hating all daedra is like hating a thorned branch of a tree that pricks you. While you focus on the cruelness of that branch, you lose sight of the bigger picture and its integral parts, the tree," or something like that. He goes on to say that weakness is not a virtue, and for battles that cannot be fought through the brashness of frontal assaults (Molag Bal), those who wish to topple corrupt empires ease in through the back door, with their blade guided by Boethiah. Then says something like advancement comes through tragedy. A civilization held in a stasis of piece has no advancement. If there are no struggles to force the mind to create new ways of overcoming them, then there is no progress. Despite the horror, destruction breeds new life. War brings innovation, and companionship. If life is left to grow on its own devices and flourish unchecked it will bring upon its own end, that is why Mehrunes Dagon is the great equalizer. So basically he spits a bunch of philosophical jargon, that i thought was dumb at first, but when you kind of sit on it and think about it, it does make sense.
Guest Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I love the lore surrounding Daedric Princes personally, I see them as equivalent to devas, or personified concepts. I like how they're considered gods among people who crave some kind of divine reflection of their own base nature, it provides folk with both a spiritual and material justification for their actions, however vile that might be. Please a chaotic being given to meddling in the affairs of mortals and you might find yourself bestowed with a game changing relic, Tamriel's equivalent of a nuclear option. And there's a moral sting in the tail; to curry favour with an immensely powerful, egotistical super being is like allowing yourself to be played with by a cat with extremely sharp claws and a very low boredom threshold. One moment you're a toy, the next you're a snack.
Myst42 Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 Well it is said... I say they suck cause they suck ... well some of them do There is the evident point that is not ALL of them I just really hate Boethiah and Mephala The point in "destruction and chaos as the bringers of balance, change and rebirth" is also a valid view that I share Strangely enough I don't think they're dicks because they like destruction, I got pissed because they asked me to kill my friends and all sorts of innocent folk Ask me to lay waste to an entire country of bandits robbers and necromancers and I'll do it with a smile on my face Regarding Malacath, I'll take it into consideration, though I don't think I have a problem... I like all that honor code thing like the samurai code. That's exactly why I DONT betray my friends not in games, not in real life. Regarding Meridia, she sounds so bossy but I mostly like her. I'm gonna see how she likes my new character though... I'm making a necromancer XD
