CaptainJ03 Posted February 28, 2025 Posted February 28, 2025 Hi yall, is there any comprehensible rule why SE/AE doesn't make Autosaves where I'd expect them from 10 years of LE experience? My problem: I coc'd to the Bannered Mare to test some mod, went out into the town and realised that this is bad roleplaying, as I hadn't discovered Whiterun yet. So - I quit and wanted to restart from the previous Autosave - which I knew existed, because I've already used that previously just before that coc detour. But now that was gone, but I have soem other, useless Autosaves from waay earlier, even before my last hard save. I'm not using any mod that alters saving behaviour, and this time it isn't from underscores in badly transferred LE mods. Any idea why SE overwrites some random autosaves and not the oldest?
belegost Posted February 28, 2025 Posted February 28, 2025 (edited) It doesn't and it shouldn't. Don't know what sort of issue you might have there, but it's definitely nothing in vanilla. As for saving, get SSE Engine Fixes and in its config file (extension .toml) flip RegularQuicksaves flag to true. That way pressing F5, or whatever you have for quick save button, will create a regular hard save instead. Very convenient option. Save smart, save often, with just one button press. Never rely on autosaves to save your butt. I think I might've actually recommend this option to you previously. Dunno why you wouldn't take it, it's a sound advice. traison Posted February 28, 2025 Posted February 28, 2025 Only reason I can think of for saves disappearing is that saves are bound to characters. If you change your character name, you get a different set of saves. I'd recommend you do a sanity check and inspect the saves directory. If the file is actually gone then we actually got something funny going on here.

I have the impression that it rather keeps saves from leaving any location than the one from entering. 1 hour ago, belegost said: I think I might've actually recommend this option to you previously. Until now I relied on Autosaves when they should be there, bacuse that's what autosaves are for. 17 minutes ago, traison said: Only reason I can think of for saves disappearing is that saves are bound to characters. And I had three autosaves (which is teh number I expect) but on silly, long gone occasions.

I don't fast travel and I use carriages/boats (CFTO) sparingly. I walk everywhere. These are long distances without autosaves. I have the habit of pressing F5 when I approach a landmark, a fight starts. a fight ends, or anything happens. Or just because I feel like I haven't saved for too long. My game has the tendency to lock up every now and again for no reason. If I were to rely on autosaves I would stop playing entirely. That does mean my save count goes into hundreds relatively quickly, but I do regular clean-ups every few days to unclog hard drive. Edited February 28, 2025 by belegost
