Aluveaux Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Good evening, folks. Not sure if this is the correct sub forum to post this, if not, please excuse the interruption. I am planning on starting an entirely new play through of Skyrim with a character archtype that is so outside of my comfort zone it isn't funny. I usually play archer types, but this time I have decided to play a pure magic user. Also denying myself the ability to use melee weapons except for daggers (Heck, even Gandalf fan dual-weild Staves and longswords!). With this new idea I have also decided to totally remod the entire game from my usual set of mods. I will be keeping the eye candy mods, such as 2k textures and such things that do not affect the character, items, weapons, or gameplay in any way. What I am looking for are suggestions on mods for Spell Casting characters, as I have in the past, given these mods no attention what so ever. So I have no idea what is good, and what is bad. I've decided on using the SevenBase body for my new character, along with the Milk Drinker skin that I found on the nexus for something that is a little bit unique, and may add a little special flavor to my heroine. Other than those things I outlined, I am open to any suggestions, deviant or otherwise, that you may think would add a special flair to my new play through. Thanks. - Aluveaux
Ashra XIII Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Mighty Magick for spells, if you're looking to do something more lore-friendly. If not, there are plenty of others out there that give you crazy spells. Skyrim Redone also has some crazy changes in the area of magick, if you're looking to change things up (as in, changing basically everything about the game). But! A good quest mod for magey characters is Angrim's Apprentice, if you haven't tried it already. Lots of fun and some pretty nice 'buff' spells.
Guest Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Apocalypse Spell Package might be a good option for you. I've used it on a recent magic user playthru and it nicely spiced things up, makes you feel like the world is built around magic rather than you feeling like the designated driver on New Years. Art of Magicka is a nice mage armor package that adds to that feeling, though it's only UNP sadly. Our own Stevierage has done a conversion of the transparent nocturnal robe for 7B cleavage and it's a personal favourite of mine. There's also the Witch Elf armor has been converted to 7B by Shocky too if I recall correctly. SPERG is a pretty gentle overhaul as they go and has some nice goodies for magic users. I tend to stay away from most of them because they change too much, but this doesn't and seems really very compatible with most other things. It opens up some autocast perk options for buffs which is very handy, and generally makes the magic stuff a lot more logical and accessible, particularly if you fancy going a route other than destruction, like say conjuration. Deadly Combat and Dual Wield Parrying also have some goodies for mages - blocking with spell readied hands if I recall, and also impact stagger mechanics and timed magic wards to reflect damage. Very handy. I'd personally be thinking about a decent hotkey mod if you're planning on a full on mage playthru as it can get a little bit unwieldly otherwise.
RitualClarity Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 My suggestion isn't mod related it is planing the characteristics. Keep in mind that the Magic user is a intellect not a brawn. Where someone with muscles can wade through a dungeon knee high in Dragurs the lower level magic user cannot. So make friends.. (hire help) and use them as needed. It would take money from the beginning of the game play and slow your purchase of magic books and such but can help "immerse" yourself more into the character. After all Gandalf had 12 others riding with him. Besides somebody has to carry all the heavy stuff. Speaking of loot the imperials find more gold and can calm once a day. Perhaps an imperial magic user? would take a little longer to grow but the money gained can help buy supplies, enchantments, and training. Level, level and level quicker. Quicker the better. Unique and different. Everybody plays a Briton. I know you want to play outside your normal comfort zone but you don't have to restrict yourself with regards to any weapons. Use whatever comes along whenever it is "intelligent" to do so. Just don't give any perks or added Stamina or other resources. Reserve all the growth in regards to making the character the bad-ass sorceress that she can be. In the beginning she would use weapons as a fall back more often than magic but as time goes on her magic will "mature" and she will start using magic more than weapons. Fall back and allow the "hired help" to clean the dungeons etc. Get healing hands as soon as possible. (Raising your Restoration quickly and keeping the "muscle" fit and healthy) As far as weapons don't worry about using them they will become more proficient on their own as you play though the game but will increasingly pale in comparison to your magic as you develop. Your Stamina will naturally restrict your use of weapons as heavier weapons will use more stamina over lighter and quicker ones. She will have to "know her weakness" afterall she is an intellectual. You like bows? Use them. There is no rule that a wizard cannot use a bow. Just don't level it up or give perks. Just use it when you have to. The Magic user has to eat don't she? When out in the woods she can walk up to a tavern she has to hunt. Pay for spells and even more gather up money for leveling which is even more important. I am getting use to the game myself and haven't played a magic user (pure ) yet but have been thinking of my play through.
Guest Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 This is for all characters but I think playing a mage would require a good mage oriented stone power. It also adds more depth since you have more possibilities compared to the vanilla stones. http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33614/?
Aluveaux Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I really appreciate the feedback. I will be starting my next play-through in the next few weeks, so I will probably make a new thread in a different area giving a bit of my progress and questions, I know I will have questions..
