Honestly with how most of the crashes sound (mainly just the strange portal) it sounds like the game just struggles understanding what's going on when the model it doesn't recognize enters the place it isn't supposed to be in. (this is just me putting it into simple terms so my brain can understand it clearer) Like even if it's just a single polygon out of place it freaks out trying to make it work and it breaks instead of having the right thing happen.

I've seen a few mod authors state it's because the game changes the mesh of the character for the MVP screen which is why most people crash right before. Even if you're not playing the character that causes the crash it will still do it if someone else gets MVP as that character. There are also some problems with some mods which crash the game when you enter a portal also, which I imagine is probably a similar problem.

would it be possible for someone to make a camera mod where you can disable the models becoming transparent/pixelated when you get too close, so you can properly admire your mods?

you can go into replay mode if you want, but in game there's currently no mod unfortunately.
