Erin Race - toning down light reflection on face help

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Be it a sunny day, or close to a fire, or near a light source, the face of my character is completely washed out when using this Race. I know their is a way to limit this by altering the texture files but I have never done this so any help guiding me would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The specific texture you're looking for is the specular face texture, it's a black & white texture that basically tells the game where to make things shiny. Editing specular textures is a little tricky without Substance Painter and the Skyrim Toolbox, but what you're trying to do is super easy:

  1. Download a DDS Exporter (Nvidia Texture tools for Nvidia graphics cards, Compressonator for AMD cards), and an image editor (GIMP with the DDS Plugin works really well)
  2. Track down the specular face texture the mod uses and import it into your image editor.
  3. Darken the parts that are too shiny with a soft round semi-transparent black brush. Turn on the vertical symmetry/mirror tool before doing any edits. You want to make sure to not mess with the bottom of the neck, or you'll give yourself a neck seam. Try to keep your edits around the face region.
  4. Export your image file, and plop it into your DDS Exporter. Export it as a DDS file with BC3 Compression for Skyrim LE, or BC7 for Skyrim SE.
  5. Replace or overwrite the original texture.
