Simpossible_xx Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 Hi. I used to create a save in a clean game right after leaving the vault, and then run the game with all my mods in MO2. However I'm wondering if any starting mods, like Start Me Up Redux or others provide a better experience. I'm mostly interested in a vanilla walkthrough, nothing fancy like alternate starts, and I'd like to know what way is the most stable. Thanks.
BDNelson Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 What version of the game again? Have you tried starting from the very beginning, at the creation menu\looks menu? With the mods enabled of course. Vortex or MO2?

I tried to start a new game with all my mods and it didn't run. Though it was a year ago and I had a really lousy mod build, now I'm making a new one.
Oreo12 Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 (edited) i would suggest using Vortex instead. MO2 is good for FNV and FO3. With a mod list of over 200 on my end including all these fun additions from here i only have a few crashes but that's always going to happen. However You cannot start a normal game with AAF enabled as the sequence in the cryopods glitches out. so alt start id recommend using is Start Me Up Normal Dialog prompts. Yes the new version is said to use. However I ran into crashes with it. the old version works. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/18946 Edited October 10, 2024 by Oreo12 2
BDNelson Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I recently updated mine, still working on getting any of my mods in though. I've never really succeeded in getting it up to snuff. But I tend to run a XXX kind of game too, that's very difficult to get working properly. "Ivy, "Nuka Ride", "AAF" and it's plethora of add-on's. WHEW! It's a lot to even think about. CBBE of FG??? I've been wrestling over that choice for a while now! Fallout is, without a doubt, my favorite and mostly played game in my gaming "life". (since the early 90's) I'm 65+ years old now, lotta water under the bridge. I've been modding it since FO3 came out as well, all attempts have been failures though, not very much success with any of 'em. I guess I just don't "get it". lol. Would like to give it another go, but I need a guide to follow for the beginning series of game fixing mods, my PTSD doesn't allow my memory to work very well. (V.N. Veteran) There's no "new version game" guides out there that I can find. 1
BDNelson Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I used to use Vortex, for a long time actually. I'm an MO2 user now, don't think I'll ever go back. Can't run 'em both on the same machine either, that's a really bad idea. Load order is critical to a working game. The Vortex\LOOT combo isn't quite right from what I saw. MO2, totally adjustable load order, any time. It has merging too, that comes in handy as well. Maybe you could try adjusting the load order a bit, move things around, see what happens? Don't save it though, at least not until you do something right anyway. I solved quite a few problems like that in 163. I had over 500 mods in at one point with it still doing fairly well, gameplay wise. Amazing how one mod can bring it all crashing down. Frustration was a HUGE factor as well! LOL!

It isn't too difficult to downgrade your game and there's a great guide available to help you get started with everything you need. However, the guide is a bit outdated and requires some adjustments. I'm gonna follow it for my current setup, so feel free to DM me about it if you are going to use a 163 version as well. And yes, it supports XXX mods, lol. 1
BDNelson Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 Hmmm... I'll consider it. This is what my girl "Blaze" looked like the last time I tried it. But the lack of updating the critical mods is ever present. The game went haywire as soon as she stepped outside of the vault. Yep, I did something wrong, still don't know what though. My solution is starting all over again from scratch. That's Ivy in the first one. 1

I used to use a vanilla save right outside the vault. Then I discovered that some mods prefer to load prewar and some load after leaving the vault. Loading everything after leaving the vault was causing issues as they were fighting for processing time, location changes etc. I made a fast-er start mod that skips some of the stuff in the vault and gives you a direct line to the exit. I also found a trick to skip the "we're being nuked" news broadcast and open the door instantly. Kind of hard to get right, but, when talking to Nate in Shaun's room, after selecting the last line get back to 1st person asap, get against the door looking down, hold W and Shift and spam E. When the door opens keep to the right side of the hallway and to the right side of the front door, all while looking down, holding W & Shift, spamming E.... When done correctly the front door will open & you'll have to back up as it pushes you into the closet a little. But it skips all that fluff. I can do it about 6 out of 10 times. It's fun the race the blond dude you see jog past. Get it perfect you can beat him to the bridge.

My main concerns about fast start mods is if they may break something... They can depending on the mods startup requirements. You may have a mod that looks for a specific cell change or to hit a specific trigger box or a certain quest stage. You just have to test it and see if they're happy doing things out of order. IF I remember right, fast start mods silently complete the critical main quest stages, like leaving the vault & walking off the vault door. Which is way better than just spawning you somewhere. So go for it, I'd suggest SKK Fast Start New Game They have several "fast start" version to choose from. 1
RazorCannon2999 Posted August 6, 2025 Posted August 6, 2025 Not had any issues with the Start me up mod. A lot of it depends on if you let the exp finish counting, if you start at a level higher than 1. Spending points before that breaks something. My way of letting the exp run without having the character get attacked(depending on start location), is to hit the ~ key. Exp will still continue to count up, but it freezes everything else in game. I had to get that because after the first 100 times of watching the spouse get shot in the head, I got tired of it. It also allows you to NOT be the sole survivor from vault 111, you get some different dialog prompts in some places. I don't quite have as many mods as y'all, but most of it's cosmetic stuff to play with here and there. Some new/improved weapons that fit into the FO universe better than all the modern weapon mods. Mainly stuck with CBBE, but I will toss in a few outfits here or there with other body types on them for some variety. 1
nmagod Posted October 7, 2025 Posted October 7, 2025 I use [Woodfuzzy Vault 111 - 1.0.4] - I get the regular intro and body creation, but the post-cryo vault is changed to let players walk right out. It also adds new weapons, which can be used by NPCs, so be aware that the wasteland is immediately more dangerous.

nmagod Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 oh lmao I just noticed that guy said "You cannot start a normal game with AAF enabled" strong evidence he fucked up his mods, because I've started hundreds of new saves to test load orders and aaf has never caused an issue there
