[Solved] Silver Hand Quest Freezing in front of Underforge

[Echi Corsair]

My game is freezing before I go or interact with the underforge and after I speak to skjor where he prompts me to go into the underforge to meet up with Aela for the first stage of the Silverhand quest. I haven't the faintest clue what's causing it. Since it's a freeze, I can't use NetScripFramework to diagnose the issue (ain't CTD-ing).

 

Thought it might have something to do with Aela transforming into a werewolf but it isn't that because the freeze happens right after I finish speaking to Skjor and before interacting with the underforge to enter it. I can coc into the underforge and the game doesn't crash or freeze so I'm thinking it could have something to do with Skjor (not that I've recently modified him or anything). And since it's a consistent freeze I am ruling out the possibility of my script just being too heavy (rather on the contrary, I haven't had this issue before and have recently replaced script heavy mods with lighter ones [yes, I started a new save]).

 

I need a hero to save me with this issue cuz I got no idea what to do and I couldn't find anyone else with the same freeze I'm experiencing. The only thing I can think of is setstaging the quest or advancing the main quest and then coming back to this quest since skyrim sometimes doesn't cooperate with certain quests being concurrently active.

So not quite a fix, but technically I did get around this by coc-ing into the underforge and setting the quest to stage 20 without talking to Skjor who was standing at the underforge entrance. That did solve it for me but this isn't a real solution so I'd still appreciate it if someone can help direct me towards possible culprits.

 

I am wondering if "Immersive Equipment display" or "read the room" are buggy mods that cause these sort of issues since this is my first playthough with the both of them enabled. Other than that but I'm also quite certain it has nothing to do with this but I could be wrong, I have recently switched over to Pandora and installed AMCO along with some animation mods. Again, I started a new save after downloading and enabling any of these. I'm just wondering if any of these mods or Pandora itself, are considered unstable and buggy. From what I can tell from actually playing the game, Pandora just seems like a gift. It's super fast and covers MCO animations plus naughty animations so its a breath of fresh air from FNIS but at the same time FNIS never had issues other than just being too old for the newer spicy combat animations out there.

 

I'm just taking shots in the dark here, I wouldn't be surprised if it had nothing to do with any of these and is a damn chicken texture mod that's causing this mess cuz its skyrim....

Had this problem myself one time years ago. But damned if I can remember what caused it or how it is fixed. It was a simple fix iirc and I'm pretty sure I found it by searching online for anyone with a similar problem and solution.

yeah i am also experiencing this bug, the only mod i have thats related to the companions is the companions quest tweaks but i started having this freezing bug way before i downloaded it, i also have a pretty big modlist

i think the bug effects the quest objective itself, everytime when it switches to "enter the underforge" or objective 15, thats when it freezes

I think I fixed it but I have no idea what the direct cause was. I didn't have any mods that modified that quest, but I've done a lot of cleaning since then and removed a lot of script-demanding mods, installed script-fixing mods, cleaned some mods using resaver, etc... I think that underforge freeze I experienced wasn't specific to one mod, but something wrong with my setup since I had been experiencing constant freezing every 20-60 minutes of gameplay. I've luckily dealt with it but I'm afraid I can't narrow down the exact cause/s.

 

After all the optimizations I've made, I came to the conclusion that mods adding NPC's are not worth it (except 3DNPC), and mods that added too much clutter in one space can cause vRAM issues would make the game prone to freezing. Since then I've removed all of JK's mods that cover exterior spaces like towns or outside of towns but not interiors, and started using a program called Lossless Scaling. Your issue might not be a vRAM issue but if you're also experiencing consistent freezing after playing the game for a while, I'd recommend looking into removing poorly optimized mods or mods that have no regard for FPS hits.
