Dark Shadows on player / Solved

Solved

Skyrim 1.5.97, Vortex, CBBE 3BA

I ran Bethini as well, no change to the shadows.

I lost my game yesterday due to me installing GOG last week, it (GOG) took over my Steam/Vortex setup yesterday all on it's own and borked my whole world.

So I uninstalled GOG, did the whole download thing at Steam, downgraded to Skyrim SE, re installed all my mods and now I have this dang Shadow issue.

I searched the Web, tried several fixes, I don't use ENB and they were mostly about ENB.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Skrim SE, to no effect.

Anyone who can or will help will be my Hero!

Thank You all for your time & efforts!

A NSFW Pic from the setup I had before the mess.

The shadows on her body looked realistic and were not dark, black patches like now.

I really don't understand what happened, and why I can't find instructions through a type search to fix this that does not include ENB issues.

I assume you mean GOG version of Skyrim (SE/AE). You can't actually install GOG, it's a website. It's more likely Vortex got excited and decided to use the new Skyrim install as its managed game. Probably could have changed settings to get back to your Steam version.

And yes I know there's Steam games that destroy eachother on purpose, but I haven't seen that from GOG. Plus that it would be a whole other mess if GOG was destroying Steam games, at least on Steam they're sticking to the same platform and publisher rather than attacking rivals. My point is I don't believe the GOG version of Skyrim would be in any way interested in the Steam version of Skyrim.

You're assuming Bethini actually knows what it is doing. How about you go delete the Skyrim.ini, SkyrimPrefs.ini and skyrimcustom.ini files in Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition. The game will make new ones. Keep a backup of the old ones if you think there's something here you can't restore from memory.

What happens if you stand her next to the lantern or other light source? Does she look the same outside and do other NPCs have the problem inside?

The GOG App, and their version of Skyrim, I assumed incorrectly that I could just let it set unused as I wanted to use it with a different Mod Manager to see if I liked it better. I had played my SSE (from Steam) for the whole week with no issues.

I had to run to my Dr. for an appointment, when I got back and turned my PC on I had issues from the start, GOG had even installed their own SKSE version in Vortex, which I did not do, I don't know it was like a dark possession of my computer, I really don't know how or why this happened, so I uninstalled GOG SSE and the App, still couldn't get things running so I Uninstalled SSE Steam and started over. I know Stupid me, you really don't have to say anything, (not that you would) I just really could use some help with this shading, Please.

By the way I shut my computer down and boot it back up when not in use so it is not like I left it on a really long time.

I would like to clarify one more thing. You are not using them in the game folder, are you? You are making changes to the file that is located where your game saves are? In My Documents? If you made changes to SkyrimPrefs.ini, which is in the root folder of the game, then you hopelessly ruined it.

Which lighting mod are you running and which skin texture? Does it affect males? If it doesn't then it's probably not the lighting mod but could be the female skin texture.

Root directory not Documents.

Now do another uninstall and reinstall?

Can't I just put all the values back and save?

Good thing I have a Backup...

No lighting mods, CBBE Curvy no extra skin textures.

In my defense I am 70 next month, I was not an Academic, I grew up working Labor jobs where I made my way in Service Jobs, building houses, working other service jobs. There was no time to learn new tech or go to school, only had this PC since the great shutdown of 2020.

I know enough to be dangerous, as they say, but all in all I have muddled through.

I just want to say Thank You for your help here, I will go reinstall SSE and change the values in Documents perfs ini this time :P  instead of in the root directory :astonished: and report back later.

Hopefully this will help others learn from my mistakes.

Thanks again!

Everything is fine, no one is obliged to know such subtleties. I myself had to experiment a lot to at least understand superficially. In the root folder of the game, usually nothing can be touched, unless it is directly specified by the creator of the mod, for example, that files need to be added to the root folder.

Not sure you need to explain anything:

  1. It only makes sense that the config files would be in the game directory. There is no way to tell those files are traps until you've edited something and it had no consequences. Even then it would make sense to question whether or not the game was doing something stupid. Why would those files NOT be *the* config files.
  2. 70 and you're here hacking Skyrim? Impressive. You're far above the skill level of the average youth. It might seem impressive they can install all these apps on Android/iPhone, but in reality they have no idea what they're actually doing. Its still somewhat common to find people that can't create, let alone edit files.
  3. Edit: Some of us here have been modding Skyrim for 10+ years.

The dangerous amateur is a stage everyone goes through regardless of profession. Quoting myself from another thread:

I've dabbled with assembly for probably 10 years now and done all kinds of remarkable things like temporarily deleted my OS and fixed a game bug where the solution confused the developers. I'm what you might call a dangerous amateur - someone that knows just enough to do a lot of damage.

If you ever dabble in assembly and manage to seemingly delete your operating system like I did, don't panic. Turn your computer off, pull the ram sticks out, have a coffee and it'll fix it self (seriously). 👍

So here is an update...literally.

when I left for the doctors office yesterday, shut down my PC, it said you have an update, OK do it and shut down......

Well therein lies the crux of the whole issue, a secondary problem I was having Steam says oh you're running in compatibility mode, we don't like that!

Here is how to fix it...so I followed their Instructions and the boxes were not checked, I'm like you're f'ing crazy Steam, but I kept getting the warnings.

So I dug deeper into the web and found that this setting is also buried deep within Microsoft user account settings, so when I finally did get there guess who had Priority...GOG. That is why it (GOG) took over and screwed my install. So I deleted those files and the warning went away.

https://www.edugeek.net/forums/gaming/39417-fix-steam-thinks-its-running-compatibility-mode.html

I am still working on the shadow issue with a positive attitude, need to start the game, build my character, set my MCM's then go see, I think the bsaoenable is the first one to try but I wanted to update you all and say again, Thank You!

@Grey Cloud Happy belated Birthday to you!

Well, basically, yes. When you delete a game, you need to delete all the tails yourself. On Steam, they are located here Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition. I usually delete everything except the saves folder.

I uninstall the game through Steam, then delete the game on drive E, delete the game in Documents, the go to appdata/local and delete SSE there as well, it is the only way I know how to do a clean reinstall. Saw a vid and that is how he said to do it.

I have seen something like this, and If I remember right removing all body mod and then reinstalling corrected the issue, But the bad thing is, sometime mod features get "burned" in to the game and you can't correct it unless you do what your doing, complete removal, reinstall.
