daledoe67 Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 just started this afternoon. windows updated votex isn't showing the saves but if you click on save file location it opens the file. I don't understand what is going on. any help? i played a new game for about any hour and it saved to my save file but it does not load either
Badtanker Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 (edited) I just got home from being gone for a few days. I had played FO 4 last night with no issues at all. Now all my save files aren't showing up when I start the game. Windows updated and I updated my drivers for my portable dvd player\burner. Any Ideas? Edited January 12, 2024 by Badtanker
chooseChaos Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 For whatever reason ... Steam has packed the .fos files into a different folder. 🙄 I 'rediscovered' them with a *.fos search in the Steam folder in a new userdata folder. 😀 1

Slorm Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Looks like some sort of fuck up by Steam with the latest update. As @chooseChaos points out it does in fact create a new userdata folder called 0 and copies the fos data into one folder and Skyrim .ess files into the other. However it also deletes the fos files from the saves folder in \documents\my games\fallout4\ and similarly for the Skyrim .ess files as well The new folders are situated in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\0\377160\ac\WinMyDocuments\My Games\Fallout4\Saves Copying the fos files back into their original directory in \documents\my games\fallout4\ fixes the issue 5
deathmorph Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Thanks for the tip, I was also just wondering about the missing saves. Now everything is fine again.
ShivasBane Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Happened to me too. Broke Fallout 4 and Skyrim SE. Was able to find the save data and move it back so the games are up and running again but I guess I'm going to have to go through my Steam library and try to repair anything else they fucked up. It seems like Steam, Bethesda, and Microsoft have decided to start 2024 with a round of destruction. The last windows 10 update fails for a lot of users and the only solution on the MS website is for users to resize their partitions. That has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. This world is going downhill so fast I'm getting vertigo. 1
daledoe67 Posted January 12, 2024 Author Posted January 12, 2024 so how do I fix it? windows 11 user, vortex, steam, FO4 my saves are still in my documents folder but they do not show up on vortex but the link to the folder on vortex opens up my saves. i just won't load them. i found the steam folder 377160\ac\WinMyDocuments\My Games\Fallout4\Saves it also shows my saves. the game works fine and it saved the new game to my save file but it will not load back to continue...

I am on windows 11 as well and my saves are in documents\my games\fallout4\saves, that bit before it meh, you could try copying them back to where the game thinks they should be as I think that is hard coded into the game itself, looks like this update has screwed the pooch big time, wonder how many other games it has affected.
daledoe67 Posted January 13, 2024 Author Posted January 13, 2024 the files are in both locations just not on vortex or in the game

'cause both must be in the old save folder. If yes, has at least today's Steam update fixed your problem? If not, my last idea would be: Steamcommunity Forum
Odrogath Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 OMG! And I thought, I am the only one. All began with "Buffout4.dll loaded too long..." or so. That Steam could be the culprit... But, why not😅 Now I'm thinking of all the gamers, who aren't here on LL. This is the only place where I found a solution. Thanks a lot for this topic!
Miauzi Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Steam has now released a new update - which resets these paths... my saves are in the old path (But I haven't started Fallout 4 for weeks... and that's probably how I escaped this crash)
katrina.balanchuk Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 I escapade the crash too beause I set my steam account to not automatically update. I have no idea the horror this update has wrought.
ShivasBane Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 My account is also set to not update unless I use the Games exe to launch it but this happened anyway. This is a 100% Steam fuckup and it's not the first time something like this has happened. This site was instrumental in helping me diagnose and fix the problem before I took drastic measures like abandoning a near 300 hour playthrough. ( I'm trying to get achievements I wasn't in a hurry to get earlier ). I thank you all for your skills and diligence not to mention your willingness to help others.
firespectrum Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 You sickos are life-savers! I've been trying to fix this on and off for a week. I should've come to LL first. 1
