Or am i going to miss out on some crucial mods that are only available with version 1.5.97? If so what mods?

Not necessarily, many old mods work just as well on Skyrim AE. It just depends on which ones, you can't know unless you try. I also use mods converted from Skyrim LE.

There are two mods that have no equivalent counterpart in 1.6.640

(I am not on my PC, so I can't check their exact names

- Grass does not spawn in objects

- Enemy movement for one of the "modern" third person combat overhauls

On the other hand, there are plenty of mods where only the 16640 version still receives updates.
