Hard freeze without crash logs

Hey all,

I've been getting an issue lately, where my game will freeze occasionally, but will not CTD. The only way out of the game is to kill it with task manager, and in doing so, I don't get any crash logs via .NET. This is not a consistent form of crash, sometimes it will CTD, which in that case, I will get logs.

Is there anything I can check to see where things might be breaking down to cause the hard freeze? I don't have any relevant logs to add, unfortunately.

This is all on SSE 1.5.97

What kind of hard freeze. hard as in everything just stops on screen (maybe the audio lingers for a sec sometimes, maybe for a while)?

if so, for me, it has become something of a Scooby Doo mystery.

It could be my video card being asked to do a big boys job with its little boy self. - possible, but it seems like to easy a scapegoat.

Or it could be some "hidden" mod contention - unlikely although probability and all that.

But lately, I've look for correlations to what I'm doing when they happen (of course after the fact), since I'm consistently getting freeze-type crashes right now... and in my case, I'm beginning to think it has something to do with key board/mouse actions, since they mostly happen at one of two events, either a wide mouse swing (player view shift), or at the exact moment I hit some hotkey  (that works fine every other time).

Of course, I'm just speculating, which...in the end ... is what you often have to do with these sorts of weird issues. And finally, on a less frequent basis (~10-20% of the time it freeze crashes) it just stops for no apparent reason while I'm walking, usually within a minute or two of the end of some active event like a fight (not just any fight, fights with booms and lightning and giant stomps and so forth)  or SL type event

General advise... Look for patterns in the crashes (freeze or not), ie what were you doing before it happened. Where were you, if battle related, which kinds of enemies,  did you notice any lag in something like an SL sequence, etc?

Literally exactly this. Sometimes it's at a door, sometimes its after a SL scene, sometimes just standing there, sometimes after talking to someone. But yeah, its probably worth sticking on debug logging (no idea why I didnt think of that), because at least I'll be able to get a better sense of whats going on, check out the patterns of why this happens.

Thanks!

As far as I know, the only way to debug a freeze is to use a debugger. I'd probably attempt to spot the frozen thread in Sysinternal's Process Explorer first. If this is out of your league, start by disabling mods containing dll files: enb, physics, fixes/patches, animation replacers, papyrus extenders, ...
