ENB Help!! AKA "WHY THE HELL DOESN'T IT WORK???!!"

I'm putting my last hope on  the next re-install

But I just can't get why doesn't it work

And it's not just ENB, its Oblivion Graphics Extender too

I have two different computers in two different places with installations of Oblivion.

In one of them OBGE works perfect, In both, ENB works like crap

To start, OBGE problem is related to the effects package

I like using "Crysis DoF" to provide blurry backgrounds, but on this PC, it doesnt work. Instead it blurs the whole screen and there's no parameter that has any effect on anything, selecting any depth of field results in whole screen blur.

I thought I could live with it, since ENB comes with DoF, but ENB has different kinds of problems

Long story short, THE ONLY ENB that I could get to work is v0.75a

And ONLY the main file.

Problem is I wanted a wider Dof since that one only makes a tiny part at the center of the screen un-blurred, and I'd like if possible to only have distance blur

The "Effects" file in that one makes the contrast so intense I can't see a damn thing either lights are too bright or shadows are entirely black

Tried another one:

"Matso S4YS" same drama, contrast overkill

"A Tweaked ENB" looked nice on the pictures, but it required ENB Core file v0.181

This is when things start to get freaky, clipping ghost lands appearing in the middle of roads, blinking lights and black faced characters with no skin texture

I'm kind of tired of this...

Like I said my last hope is re-installation but I still can't get the damn things to work

Any ideas on what could have possibly gone wrong?

What kind of card you own?

First some details... it is -impossible- for ENB to cause black faces with no skin textures since ENB is an "overlay" so to speak. It touches nothing related to texture paths. So, if anything is causing that it is not ENB. Also, you should NEVER run both OBGE and ENB at the same time. Pick one or the other, not both.

Personally I suggest getting rid of OBGE (and all of it's files) and stick to ENB. OBGE is pretty much dead by own, while ENB continues to be updated and a lot of the presets and tweaks for Skyrim ENBs also work in Oblivion.

Also, are you using injector or wraper?

Ok on the one that doesnt work:

ATI radeon HD4300/HD4500 series

I can't get rid of OBGE, besides I use it the way people say not to use it... using the plugin that lets you turn on/off changes in game, so most of the time its off except for taking screenshots. But the main reason I can't get rid of it is some mods that require it, like OBGE Liquid Water for example, and I can't live without that one

The worst ENB said explicitly to install the wraper one on v0.181 so that one...

Oh and about the black faces... ok maybe not black but here's what happens:

These were taken with ENB v0.181 + "A Tweaked ENB" in anvil bay... on board a ship...

Turn ENB off in game and the blinking yellow lighs issue takes place

Delete all ENB files and everything goes back to normal

ATI, that explains a lot :P well, here is my suggestion and I know you MIGHT not like it but is the only way I see out of this.

1) Backup your "shaders" and "obse" folders. Then delete all of OBSE's shaders and overrides, the OBGEv2.dll and OBGEv3.dll and the shaderlist. Then uncheck the liquid water esp and OBGE support esp (I know what you mean about needing liquid water as I used OBGE for the longest time. But once I tried ENB  and saw the difference in quality/performance I never looked back. But in case you still want to go back to OBGE you can just restore these folders.)

2) delete all the ENB files you have in your Oblivion folder. Now, your game should run vanilla and ugly. I'd suggest loading a save to test this.

3) Make sure you are not forcing AA or Anisotropic filtering via your card's software. Also make sure Oblivion is set to HDR.

4) Download the 181 version from http://www.enbdev.com/download_mod_tesoblivion.htm, but -only- copy the d3d9.dll into your Oblivion folder. Make sure is from the wrapper version. The injector version needs you to configure an additional ini file and to run an additional program (ENBinjector.exe), otherwise it won't properly if you just drag the files to your oblivion folder.

5) Download the AMD version from http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/44146/ and run your game.

I am positive that by then you should have ENB running properly and you can test if you are willing to trade Liquid water for ENB's effects.

Why this? What's wrong with the controller version? One can't get more visual flexibility than with in-game tweaking of any shader settings on-the-fly.

Besides, who are these people that dictate others which plugins to use and which not?

Weird LOD issues might also be the result of edited ini settings, for example uGridsToLoad set to a value higher than the default of 5. Changing the load order or installing any new landscape mods and not refreshing the LOD with 'TES4LODGen' everytime afterwards can also mess up VWD graphics.

Thanks, managed to identify the problem, it was incompatibility with Liquid Water... seems most ENB have that problem now

Despite everything looked pretty with nice colors and stuff... I don't think I'm ready to get rid of LW. I saw water and ever with all effects it still looked like crap to me. Besides LW comes with better lava too.

Think I'll stick with ENB v0,075a... it has a sober but nice color effect, I managed to make the focus zone a bit larger and It works perfectly with OBGE stuff.

I still couldn't get the Crysis DoF work without blurring the whole screen... so it could be my graphics card fault?

No. This is because none of the OBGE dofs are designed to work in third person. You either get it all blurred or have the effect jump around every time you move since third person changes the focus of the camera. The only way out is to write your own shader or play without DOF. You have to get really lucky to get any DOF to actually work with third person views.

And to each their own :P. IMO ENB is immensely superior to OBGE, liquid water and all.

Agreed on the second, I like LW.

But I don't think that third person is the problem.

To explain better I said I have two different installations of Oblivion in two different places.

One of them works. I've tested that DoF shader and it definitely works.

Here's proof of it:

That's using Crysis DoF from OBGE. Notice the alien being the focused detailed point and the background is blurry

But on this one It doesn't. No matter what I install, it doesn't work. The first picture from the OP post is the testimony. It's not a matter of moving the camera or being in third person. It has no focus point. Everything is blurry

To tell the truth I don't care much about graphic when gaming... I only activate OBGE stuff for screenshots

The less graphic stuff when gaming, the faster I can get rid of those pesky little creatures, bandits, daedra and whatever comes...

A better performance means a more effective gameplay. But for screenshoot purposes, a good graphic quality is required.

I'm using the one on Nexus... I also tried the latest experimental versions on the OBGE official page... same results and more complicated to install... lots of esps and even an esm... don't know what more than half of them did and which ones I really needed active... installations instructions not clear at all. All for the same bug.

I think I'm starting to drop the towel on this one... maybe on a re install... or on future new hardware... for the moment ENB v0.075a works for producing DoF...

I used to be like that too, since OBGE destroyed my FPS's when using both DOF and SSAO :P but now I can use ENB at highest quality and keep an average of 40 FPS everywhere and during combat. Also, there are no obligatory esps or ems in the Google code repository o.o. Just the support one and updates for liquid water, darker dungeons and enhanced seasons.

I played with it for the longest time using only the shaderlist and the liquid water esp. But give this a try. I am not sure if your version of OBGE has this on the shaderlist, but if it does check turn Shaped_Bokeh_DoF.fx to 1 and put this on your shader folder. It something I tweaked to have a distant blur.

Here you can get an idea how it looked like in my game, however I also had SweetFX.
