Help Create a .BSA file

I have been working with a mod I downloaded called "Three Katana" mod. I had to extract a .Bsa file in order to edit the meshes to the correct size to fit my character's body size. Now that I am done with the meshes, I am now having a hard time re-packing the files into a working .Bsa file that will work correctly in-game. If I just zip the file, my game runs really slow while attempting to use the forges in riften, whiterun, and the sky forges. Can someone please help me make a .Bsa file that will work? The issues I am having are:

1. When I repack the files, I enter the game and the weapons are not showing up in my hands. My character swings as if she is using the weapon, but there is nothing in her hands at all. In other words the animation plays, but the weapon is absent.

2. I put the files in a zip file so I can activate them via "nexus mod manager" but when i try to use the "Forge" menu in-game, it is extremely slow and stutters so I can't scroll to the categories (iron, Leather, Ebony, Daedric, misc, etc..). I think this is due to the files being unpacked.

Can someone please make these files .bsa so that I would only have a .esp, and just a .bsa file that I can rezip and activate in nexus mod manager. Below is the zip file, but they are not in .bsa format, but just unpacked.

Have you tried BSAopt?

A BSA you made must have the same filename as the .esp. Both files must be in the same data folder.

Yeah I tried that, but every time I pack the .bsa, when I rezip that along with the .esp when I load it into nexus mod manager, activate, and go in game the weapon does no show up in my hands. Like I'm swing an imaginary weapon, but the animation is being played as if I am holding it. Plus, once I try to use the forge to craft armors or weapons, it is extremely slow

created a bsa via CK archive and have the same outcome

Ok!! I created a .bsa using the "Archive" tool in skyrim default directory. I renamed all the files "Elemental Katanas" so now I have

1. Elemental Katanas.bsa

2. Elemental Katanas.esp

The weapons are now showing up in game, but I am still getting the extremely low frame rate while accessing the forge. I thought it was the files being unpacked, but turns out thats not it for they are now .bsa packed. Anyone know what could be causing this extremely slow frame rate while accessing the forge. Here is my load order:

I think the texture is too large (4k) for your PC to handle, and if you were to redistribute it, not everyone would be able to use your mod; you'll have to scale down the texture size to 1k or 2k. Also, it seems that BSAs take some time to unpack and load into memory as it's being extracted. A similar example is found with MrTroubleMaker's armor/clothing mods, which are hi-res textures packed in BSAs.

Yeah I downloaded the mod from the skyrim modtype site. Originally the swords were too large, so I scaled them down to normal katana proportions. I'm still kinda new to modding skyrim, so I don't know how I should lower or remove the scripts. If I were to edit the texture size, which tool should I use for that?

You actually don't have to re-pack it at all if you have the space. And it's actually recommended to leave them loose. Or to archive them and let your Mod Manger Program unpack/mange them.

Keep in mind the resource load order as well

BSAs and You

Resource Load Order

  • Registered BSAs
  • Loose Files
  • Plugin BSAs

The following is taken from STEP:

Archiving the textures

Use 7z, WinZip, WinRar or any compression application to package into a *.7z, *.zip or *.rar archive. The archive package can then be dropped into the Bash Installers directory and installed, if using Wrye Bash. If 7z compression is used to archive textures (or other files for Skyrim) the non-solid option should always be chosen and LZMA2 compression chosen which allows multiple cores to be used. Non-solid compression may slightly increase the size of the archive file, but the benefit is huge when (un)installing upstream packages, which can include re-unpacking from the huge vanilla archive; the result is the extraction goes much faster. In order to use these options in 7zip, when using the 7zip right click context menu select the Open Archive option and the options will be shown in the GUI. Note that if textures are optimized the UHRP files, and many other BSAs as discussed in the BSAs vs. loose files sidebar, also need to be extracted from the BSA and used as archived set of loose files (vs. leaving the UHRP and the other files as BSAs).

Repackaging Resources into BSAs

To move the optimized textures back into BSA(s), use DDSopt by setting [ignore]' > [Don't process any of the know file types] and pointing the output to YourOutputPath\YourFileName.bsa. This is not recommended for the four vanilla BSAs that contain only textures, as then BSA(s) will need to be registered in Skyrim.ini, and load time is slightly increased (and this option is more complicated). Using the recommended approach for the addon DLC BSAs, the DLC BSAs are not moved from Data directory. Instead the textures are extracted, and the optimized versions of these DLC textures are stored as archive files similar to those of HRDLC. For the addon DLC BSAs, repacking the optimized textures with the other extracted DLC resources into a BSA can cause problems. A number of users have reported CTD errors after doing this. We don't really understand the cause. The default compression level used by DDSopt is higher than that used for the Bethesda files, but even if the DDSopt compression level is changed to the same level as Bethesda uses there are apparently still problems.

for the dds you can use gimp with plugin, ps or any other proggie that can read/save dds files

this looks better added them to crafting

Thank you all for helping me with this issue, Was the sheathe in hand apart of the scripts? That was one of the best features about that mod.

Not completly true, as the last patch for Skyrim fixed this issue, so loose files win above their counterpart inside BSAs.

not sure some where quest related, but some of the swords still appears in your hand, just craft all of them and try them out, and you will see

Ok I tried them out, most of them were in the default side sheath, but thanks for helping me locate the source of the super slow loading in the forge. Again thank you so much guys for your help, I think I can handle the rest on my own now.
