Gaming Laptop issue.

I have a Dell Gaming Laptop G3 17. Anyhow, it decided to shit itself, two years ago. I have slowly been replacing what I thought was wrong with it. I replaced the battery first. I was able to repair windows with the charge it had. My power cord was not charging the battery. So, I replaced the power cord next; it took 6 months to save up enough money for it.

 

I plugged it in and still I could not get my laptop to charge and to turn on. This got me thinking that it could have been something else. And after another year, for searching and being a pain the a. My friends and family told me the issue could be the DC port. So, recently I was able to get one, however, I got the wrong version. I got the 15 version for my laptop and needed the 17. Could this error in types be the main cause for my laptop not charging or turning on?

Hmm, hate to say this but unless you are a computer tech, laptops apart from a few things are not really user serviceable, and dell tend to use custom components in theirs as well, or at least my old dell inspiron laptop does.

 

But yes the dc port difference could be the problem for it not charging, you would need to look at the pin outs on both parts and see if they match, they may or may not match, if they do it should not be a problem, if they do not then that is probably part of the problem.  There could also be problems with the actual circuit boards controlling the charger, I hate to say this but you might be better off saving up a bit, then taking the whole thing plus any chargers you have to your local computer store that does repairs on laptops and getting them to do a test on it to find out what is wrong, then you can go from there depending on what they tell you, and it might be depending on what is wrong with it, it will be cheaper to save up and buy a new one rather than repair the current one.

 

Just had another read through things, if with a new charger and power cord it does not even turn on, chances are there is nothing you can do to fix it, as it may well be either a small cable somewhere inside that has in effect worn out or there are components on the mother board or some other board in the laptop that have worn out or blown, in which case a repair shop or somebody you know who does repairs on laptops is probably your only option.

Thank you for replying, I also had a thought about a cable being burnt or worn out. I'm going to get another dc port the right one this time. IF it doesn't work, I'm taking it in to my local computer repair shop. I dread at paying $100. If I need to do this for me to get my laptop back, then Ill spend the money. Thank you again for replying.

Best bet I think would be to have someone in the repair business take a look at it.

 

Unfortunately as Varithina said laptops are not generally something the end user can service even if you know something about computers. Desktops would be a different story, but even then when you talk prebuilts like Dell and HP they tend to use proprietary parts as a big middle finger to keep you from replacing parts on your own.

I just had a though, you said you bought a new power supply, and then though the old cable was an issue, you did not get new cables with the power supply? Every power supply I have bought, and I have bought two for my old dell and one for my current custom build, came with both power socket to the power supply, and supply to laptop cables.  Though in the case of the second dell on the cable from the power supply to the laptop was part of the power supply and could not be removed, but on the first power supply I bought and the current laptops one, both cables can be replaced.

 

There again, do you know anybody with access to a multi meter and the knowledge of how to use it, if so get them to give both the old and new power supply and cables a check over and see if there are any problems with them, though chances are there is more likely something wrong with the power control circuits withing the laptop, or even worse the mother board on the laptop is dead in some way or other.

 

I can feel for you about costs though, my current laptop overheats and shuts down when trying to do certain things, mostly big updates and such, and the last time it happened was about a week after it went out of warranty, the company were pretty good about it though, asked me details and such, but in the end cost me £100, for what would be something like 10-15 minutes worth of work to find out what was wrong and replace the fan on the processor with a new one, the £60 of it however was courier fees to send it back to them and return it, no way was I going to use normal post for a £2.5k laptop.

Sorry for the late reply, I agree with what everyone is saying it makes since. I didn't know that Dell used custom parts, it makes sense.
