"Best" scrapping mod?

Recommended Posts

I like to scrap almost everything in my settlements and along roads (using mobile workshops) to "rebuild" the Commonwealth.  However, I routinely have several CTDs because I keep busting precombines (I am 90% certain this is my issue for CTDs based on crash logs).   A couple of scrap mods have come out (S.C.R.A.P.) which do not play well with mods that alter settlements, so I keep used Spring Cleaning and still use Scrap everything.

Are there mods that I am not aware of that will accomplish the same thing?

The only successful one I have seen is Clean my settlement Redux https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/58757?tab=posts

This makes trash, bushes, etc invisible and then places visible duplicates. These are what you scrap, so the precombines remain untouched.  Only works on smaller items, which suits me as I like to keep the rundown character of settlements.

Thanks for the suggestion.   I  think I will just have to save often as I love looking at Far Harbor with lighted roads between all the settlements, each settlement looking like a castle or walled town and plenty of trash cans so people won't throw trash everywhere (i.e. I scrap all the trash).   Ah well,   for heavy duty modders (250 plus), we gotta learn to accept the limits and press onward.

You could... err.. edit the combines and recompile them... arhhh lol.

That is like working on mod coding...getting frustrated and saying "fuck it, I wanna play on my time off" approach.

The first time I used Scrap Everything I made the mistake of disabling precombines in the ini file as I didn't understand what they were at the time and thought that was what was needed to run the mod.  Big. Mistake.  I started getting CTD's mid game, and horrendous lag in 4 or 5 settlements.  I went without it for a while during a long testing phase which lasted about 2 or 3 months.  Some folks say it's not bad to use Scrap Everything as long as you don't disable precombines.   I think it still breaks precombines in settlements but not other places in the game world from what I understand.

So now I use it *very* sparingly.  Like, if there is a fireplace in a house that isn't lit up, I'll scrap it and replace it with a working fireplace.  Little things like that.  Occasionally I'll remove a trash pile to place something down.  But recently I found that removing trash can reveal floors that no longer have collisions.  I don't know what causes this.  I've had to unpack the meshes folder from the main game, and place a few individual files to "fix" Taffington Boathouse and the Lighthouse house.  2 or 3 other settlements seem to have this problem, and it's not just me.  But I've no idea what causes it.  It could be SE, or something else.  In the case of Taffington, I hadn't touched the place yet, just cleared the bugs and was sinking into the floor.  Found a thread on the SimSettlements Forum detailing a fix, and then found out which files fix the Lighthouse through Trial and Error.

Precombines are Fucking Weird.  I still don't 100% understand them, except, don't break them if I know what's good for me.  I still use Boston FPS Fix with the PRP author's patch for it, seems to wrap enough duct tape around the damn thing to hold it together.

What exactly is my point here?  I guess it's this:  Stop using Spring Cleaning, Keep using Scrap Everything, don't disable precombines in the ini file (there's an option in the SE Installer that people inadvertently toggle that also turns of precoms so make sure you haven't done that) And then, like, scrap less stuff?  I guess.

p.s. HouseKGrndAddonRoom01.nif fixes the floor at the kingsport lighthouse for anyone that finds this thread in the future, but the walls and roof still lack collisions without some more meshes unpacked.

the one scrapping mod I use now is called SCRAP - Sweep - Clean - Remove - and - Prune

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/61092

it scraps most stuff except building, roads and other stuff(cannot remember) however it uses buttons on the workshop that will remove building, NPC, Roads, etc

and it seems to work quite well

but what it allows you to enable precombines in the ini file

One thing I learned is that precombines are already enabled by default regardless of having "bUseCombinedObjects" in the ini file.  Apparently the only time you'd put that into the ini file is if you were going to turn them off.  Otherwise that line doesn't need to be in there for any reason.

my point is that you don't need to break precombines with Scrap

Thanks all for the replies.  I am gonna try keeping Scrap Everything and reinstall to make sure I am not breaking pre combines.   As for SCRAP, I ran into unusual CTDs with NR, and since Nuka Ride is now a required mod for me, I dropped it.     I am not saying SCRAP caused it, but that was the difference that seemed to fix the CTDs.

Too bad Nexus has so many mods that make the game great as I am looking for another site, one that isn't as toxic.
