Your Best Tactics for Dragon Fights (spoilers, of course)

I finally got a chance to get a few more Skyrim hours in, so I thought I'd advance the main quest a bit and do the Thalmor ambassador quest. That went well, but there was a blood dragon waiting back at Riverwood who was royally kicking my ass.

 

So I sprinted to the Sleeping Giant to see if I could take cover there and recover a little. Talked to delphine and when I exited, the dragon was gone. One way of dealing with them, I guess.

 

Shortly afterwards on the way to Sky Haven Temple, got into a fight with a frost dragon. I held off to see if the dragon or the foresworn would kill each other, but that didn't seem to have much effect on either side.

 

So I ended up in a shouting match with the dragon. That worked surprisingly well.At least I managed to shout it out of the sky, anyway. Closing to melee distance while half frozen was challenge, but I got there in the end.

Orc's Berserk Rage + Werewolf form. (Use Drangonrend shout to get it to land)

 

I haven't found anything in the game that could stand up to this attack. Less than 20 sec's and you will be standing there alone waiting for the werewolf to cool off.

 

This is some serious devastation. You can attack it from the front, side or ass end. It doesn't matter - It will die.

Elders fall in a few swipes to my daedric sword. Ancients still require odhaving(sp?). Of coarse, for some reason, most dragons are terrified of me now. >>;

Lighting storm it to bits(+magica potions on the realy big ones) 30sec-1min dragon fights sometimes using the sword to finish them off as they land but usualy they die while flying and come down...dead

This is how you defeat dragons easily.

 

1. Have your bow ready, and get a companion

2. Just stand there like an idiot and shoot at the thing every time it hovers

3. Once it lands (like an idiot), just get your melee weapon out and rinse the f*ck out of it

 

4.Repeat from step 1, until its dead

 

 

Difficult battles lol! A lot of strategic thinking is(nt) required!

 

Still though, the fights are cool and sometimes cinematic, even though they're 80% predictable.

I use Mark of death on them and they die easily with a few hits of my Dual Swords. I also use a summon or a companion to distract them.

If you get the Atronach stone, dragons suddenly become incredibly easy

so any tips for fighting them on master difficulty? where they oneshot you with a cinematic kill even if you're at full health and one direct blast from their breath is enough to kill you?

So' date=' if you have had fights with dragons, what tactics you have found useful and what haven't worked? I am curious to hear others' experiences.

 

Thus far I have had two proper fights, besides the first main quest dragon fight and one improper. The improper one was where giant first stole my kill by engaging and killing the dragon before me, and then had the gall to rob me of life after robbing the kill.

 

First successful fight: Used bow and loads of arrows, running from one side of the hill to another at Shearpoint. I basically whittled down the dragon, while managing to survive by having the stone and the hill block most of the breath weapon blasts.

 

Same tactic didn't work out north of wayward pass, when dragon used strafing rather successfully. Mind you, that dragon's breath weapon was much more powerful and had better reach.

 

I am eager to hear your experiences on how to get the dragons depart with their lives.

These might work against dragons:

-Fire/cold resistance potions/trinkets

-Bow damage increasing potions/trinkets

-Magic user/bow using companions are more helpful than melee using companions

 

You got the basics covered (stay away with bow/magic and use terrain to your advantage), so you'll have no trouble taking them down if you'll just tweak tactics a bit.

...Honestly I don't even bother with anything "special"... I just use whatever element the dragon is not (fire and lightning cover my bases, I prefer lightning when they're flying around) and I just dual cast an apprentice level spell whenever it tries to attack, it gets stunned and tries to attack again, it does this for a good 5-10 seconds then flies around. When it tries to do that sweeping breath attack through the air, lightning cancels it well. I don't know how it is on Master, but on Expert I go without ever taking a hit from a Dragon. They're pretty pathetic to be honest.

 

Of course this strategy starts to crumble if you don't have enough MP. (which has never happened to me...)
