Creating A Standalone Follower

I am creating a standalone follower named Shadow. Is there any tips or guidence anyone could tell me about?

I've not sat through the entire thing yet, but the creator of the Lucien follower mod, a standalone custom voiced follower, made a series of tutorial videos that starts off with walking through the vanilla system. Give that a try, and maybe come back and let us know how well it worked for you, yeah?
