Transparent/invisible hair bug, & shadows rendering through character

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hair often shows as invisible, with any part of the character covered by the hair also being completely transparent.  I'm currently using KS hairdos, however this has also occurred with vanilla hair.  I'm not using HDT hair, so I doubt it's any sort of physics bug.

This seems to happen whenever I unequip my armour, when removing the helmet the hair will show as normal while the UI's open, but as soon as I close the inventory menu it'll show like this.  When this is happening shadows are also visible through my character, as shown in the screenshot.  I don't know a great deal about this stuff but it's kinda like it's being rendered on the wrong layer (?).  This isn't limited to specific cells like some hair bugs I've seen while researching, it's happened in all interior and exterior cells I've tested in.  It's something that only started happening a good way into the save, past level 30.  I have no saves from before this started to load back on so I can't try that.

My best guess is it's still trying to hide the hair as if I'm wearing a helmet even though it's unequipped.  I've noticed that if I remove all my armour, quicksave and reload my character will be wearing the helmet when i reload, even though I unequipped it before saving.  However this bug will still occur even when I have no helmets in my inventory.  I've also looked into a few different KS hairdos bugs, and edited the .nif file for the hairstyle I'm using as recommended by a few of those threads.  It didn't fix anything, and as mentioned earlier I've since noticed this happening with vanilla hair as well.  I've also resorted my load order with LOOT to no effect

I put a strike through all the helmet related stuff because I've now noticed slavetats also render transparently, so I think it's an entirely different issue.

My load order and a screenshot are below.

This suggests that some spell/magic effect is stuck to your character.
In these cases, the kill command in the console sometimes helps. Skyrim will then load the last save before dying, but will remove some stuck effects from the character in the process. Open console -> click on player -> type kill -> press enter

What happens if you equip a completely different helmet before saving?

Equipping a different helmet changes nothing, except that it's the different helmet that gets re-equipped after loading.  Using the kill command doesn't change anything either, although I didn't expect it to.  I strongly suspect this is a rendering bug of some sort, rather than a spell effect.

I've also tried using sisme0, which afaik should stop all spell effects from being visible, and it didn't do anything.  Which is why I don't think it's a spell effect.

So a script that puts on the helmet at game load?
What happens if you don't have a helmet in your inventory ) Papyrus.log ) ?

Go to Riverwood thieves guild face sculpter or open racemenu via console.

If there is a helmet, you will see it. Close and make a new save.

Do not make or use quicksaves

Btw, checking for a bug you should exit the game and reload a save.

Reload a save or even a quicksave on running game might not load a corrected bug.

Also not recommended on ongoig game. Never reload, always exit, restart and load.

If I don't have a helmet in my inventory the hair bug still occurs, just without the helmet ever being requipped.  TBH I regret ever mentioning the helmet thing, I;m not even entirely sure if it's related to the actual issue which is both hair (and slavetats as I just noticed) rendering transparently, but every response I've got is focusing on the helmet.
