Moving FO4 install to another hard drive

I got a pretty decent mod-setup which is quite stable for Fallout 4. However, I would like to change it from my HDD to my SDD. Is that possible without breaking the install? Or am I out of luck and would I need to do a complete re-install?

Thanks in advance!

You may be able to transfer, though it may well depend on which mod manager you are using, if its mo2, then it should be as simple as change the steam install folder for fallout 4 to the new hard drive, then move the mo2 install over, then go into the mo2 ini file and change the relevant paths to the new location, before running mo2, and it should work.  If that does not work you may need to look at all the exe files mo2 can run and change them to the new location, that is of course assumes you are running mo2 in portable mode as they have been recommending for some time now, well they were the last time I looked anyway.

Usually you can't move any application "by hand" without breaking the registry. If you got Steam game you can ask the support how to update the game to a new location. If it's pirated install, well... There where programs for copying applications from one location to another (keeping all hard links) but it's long time since I used such software...

Ok, thanks for the update. I'll work with this.

I've never heard of this portable mod for MO2, though.

You should get asked if  you want to install mo2 as portable the first time you install it, also every time after that you install it elsewhere, If you do not like the way profiles work in mo2, then multiple installs of mo2 will work, though keeping them all up to date can be a bit of a pain, and of course it takes quite a bit of disk space as you in effect have every mod you use installed on each install of mo apart from skse anyway.

Portable mode in mo2 is basically the way mo1 worked, with a separate install of the program for each game, one for skyrim, one for skyrim se/ae, one for fallout 4, etc, the other way would simply have one install of mo2 and then you would choose which game from mo2 control panel or what not, never ran it that way myself so no idea how it really works.

From what I remember updates to windows os can break them, sometimes very badly, and often it can take quite some time for them to be updated, whether the programs moved by them can be used or not can be very hit and miss as well, but like yourself I have not used them for years, not since steam allowed you to have multiple install locations.
