saddad Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 After installing Xpmsse you will get the shield on back animation, i.e. your character will reach for the shield on the back when you sheath/unsheath weapon, but the shield will still show on your left hand instead of on the back. Changing the ingame mcm settings does nothing. The problem has bothered me since start using xpmse, but if you do a google search, many web pages will tell you to install the Auto Unequip Shield to back mod, which is absurd when reading the description it asks you to favorite a shield to use it. Then I finally found out now that you just need to install a dual sheath mod to show the shield on back, which you can't tell by the mod name, and nowhere in the description page of xpmsse tell you to install dual sheath mod to show shield on back. Just sharing this so others can know.

Sometimes you need to go beyond the mod name. And yes, the XPMSSE description is a bit sparse on descriptors... but it does point to several resources. Among these you can find things like Dual Sheath mods, because dual sheaths and shields on back are part of the same game limitation: little control over how/when they're displayed on actors. So most dual sheath mods will address the problem of displaying 2 weapons at the same time and the shield on the back of the characters instead of their hands, even other pieces of gear (misc items like coinpurses, potions, scrolls, or other unequipped weapons). And there are different approaches here, but remember all of these mods are doing something the base game is not doing already, so asking the player to favorite their shields so the mod can detect it and display it on the back of the character is not absurd, it's just part of the implementation the mod author made for that mod. But don't be saddad, be happydad, because today you discovered Dual Sheath and shields on back mods. BTW, if you're on Skyrim SE the best combo for this is Simple Dual Sheath and Immersive Equipment Displays. The latter even has a custom menu to tweak what, where and how to display things as you play and see the changes.
