Normal-map Editing?

EDIT: Solved my problem through a lot of GIMP suffering, but it turned out aight in the end!

A little unsure where I should ask this.

So I am trying to edit these textures from VTAW's wardrobes:

See those triangles? I have removed them from the Diffuse, but not the Normal map, but I have no idea how to approach this as the normal map has way more details. It's not a simple copy&paste line-draw job. I don't quite know how those were made.

I want to take my modded Diffuse and make a Normal, and I know there's a gimp filter I can use to do this.. but I also want those details though!

I heard terms thrown around like baking around a 3D model, or somehow pasting the diffuse over a 2D image. Can someone point me to a tutorial?

Here an example of how to do it.

I do not have the orig image so this is the best I can do:

Would you like the triangles to be transparent?
Then the cleanest solution would be to load the nif into the outfit studio (VTAW usually already has an outfit studio Sliderset) and to create a ZapSlider for the triangles. The advantage is, it only takes a few minutes, can be undone and you don't need an alpha in Diffuse.

But how?? I don't mean to sound ungrateful since you basically solved my problem for me, I just don't know the process. . . Wait is this just a layering trick?

EDIT:
Well maybe you didn't do that but I CERTAINLY DID! MWAHAHAHAH! *crai*
GIMP is a monster. But I did manage to get rid of those triangles, more or less spotless.

I thought of this, but I don't think that's going to work this time. The triangles don't have their own Mesh, it's just a re-textured bodysuit.

If I were to hide those triangles, It would be like cutting open triangles into the bodysuit.
