Guest Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Just a little (and silly ) question I have. There is a site called TOTO (The Oblivion Texture Overhaul) which includes links and descriptions of many well known texture changing, enhancing, and other graphics related mods for Oblivion. So, I've been wondering: what computer specs would I need to run the best of those mods (all the ones that are compatible with each other) on Oblivion's highest settings, with MTAEWVD, AND OBGE (plus Qarls )? So basically: what specs are needed to run Oblivion at it's absolute greatest with the addition of all or almost all (all that are compatible) of the absolute best and highest quality graphics and texture enhancing mods with a stable, high, and consistent (25+) framerate? You don't need to know the exact answer, but any rough estimates? Here's a link to the site: http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/obliviontextureoverhaul.html
Aleanne Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I'm afraid such a computer doesn't exist. Processor is the bottleneck, Oblivion isn't optimized to run on multicore, which are now the main standard.
gregathit Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 WEll, I am running 64-bit Win7 with an I7-930 2.8GHz processor, 12GB of ram, with a 560Ti video card. I am running most of stuff from the site including OBGE and quarl's and the only place I stutter a tad is and the IC waterfront (which is a known problem with better cities anyway).
Guest Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 @gregathit, Just one 560? Damn, that's not as bad as I thought it would be! If you can post screenies, I'd love to see what your game looks like. @Aleanne, wow, that sucks, fuck crappy console to pc ports!

EvenstarGW Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Lol, here I am trying to keep the game running on a Dualcore E5300, 4GB RAM and a GeForce 240 GT. RAEVWD murders my framerate, but I can't live without it anymore, so I make do. Battles usually end up as slideshows, with bodies slowly floating down to earth afterwards. I'm not even gonna try adding OBGE to it. I wish I could be more selective in the mods I install (more than 100GB in oblivion's data folder), but I seem to value eyecandy over high framerates. I'm pretty much down to the same framerate I used to get from Oblivion on my old pc, but at least it looks a whole lot better this time

Have you tried degrading from RAEVWD to a less demanding version?
gregathit Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 They do link on the TOTO site to a version for lower end machines, course I have never tried it to see how much different it is. I am ashamed to admit my oblivion install is now pushing 48GB. I have got to STOP adding clothing & armor damn it!!!!! ....its just that people keep putting out this amazingly cool stuff.....

Have you tried degrading from RAEVWD to a less demanding version? I've reduced the impact by removing the imperial city plugin, because it was adding stuff that was hidden from almost any angle. Also went through all the large rocks and replaced them all with the smallest version I could find. Strangely, even though they all use the same mesh, there was a considerable difference in size between some of them. Apart from that I haven't tried anything yet, as I thought RAEVWD was the most optimised version. Using QTP3 reduced/redimized probably also adds to the strain. Also, I have some trouble getting old mods to clear from distant terrain. For instance, I removed the Heroes store, but even after running Lodgen multiple times the platues still float against the mountain from afar. Anyone know how to get rid of those sorts of things? As for the 100+ gigs, armors, armors, armors. Can't stop getting them if people don't stop putting out better and better stuff. Although a lot of it is probably not seeing much use.
bradleyh Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 You want a dedicated video card with a minimum of 1GB of VRAM, but 2Gb or more is better. If you are getting into texture replacers and using OBMM, consider going to Wrye Bash and BAIN, because BAIN gives you more control of what gets overwritten when new mods are installed.
gregathit Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 EvenstarGW, depending on how you installed the mods will depend on how you get rid of the distant LOD's. If OMOD (or BAIN) then they should have been removed when you deactivated the mod. But I am guess here that they were manual installs, if so then you will need to track down the LOD's and delete them and then check your archive invalidated.
EvenstarGW Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Ah yes, those were installed before I started to use OMOD, although I must say I don't use OMODs for much anymore because I don't think it keeps track of stuff that's used by multiple mods. I should figure out BAIN, but I'm afraid my install is already too much of a mess for that to do much good now. One day I'll gather the courage to try and collect all the stuff needed for my treasured personal mods, and make a clean install, and try to keep it as clean as possible. Anyway, I use Archive Invalidation Invalidated. What should I be checking?
gregathit Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Well first you are going to need to find the mods that you uninstalled and open them up to see where they dumped there LOD's and what the file names are. I suppose if you are feeling lucky you can just look without doing this but you may miss some and\or never find anything. They will be in your textures folder but depending on the mod the name of the folder they are in could be damn near anything
EvenstarGW Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Oh, I keep backups of pretty much everything I download, so I'll be able to find it if I look hard enough. Thanks for the info.
gregathit Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 No problem. Once you hunt them down and delete them depending on your method of archive invalidation you may or may not need to do anything. Also check to make sure the mod didn't include a bsa file - I had one LOD I just couldn't seem get rid of until I took the time to really look closely at the mod to find the bsa. Then just rerun teslodgen and you should be set.
